John Lounge you will never be forgotten

Pass around the green jug for this legend

What do people think when you say, “Lounge?” Besides the obvious, “Yes!” Lounge represents something much more than most people initially realise.

Upon arriving at Bristol, and experiencing the famous nightlife for the first time, freshers learn there are two distinct clubbing categories. Establishments which partake in cheese and chart music, and more wavy places that play deep house, grime and trap. Two continents of feeling, opposed, drifting away from each other.

Perhaps the most famous club in Bristol, Motion, provides students with their much desired skanking. However, for years and years the iconic Lizard Lounge has brought unique experiences to students galore.

Every city has their equivalent cheesy club, Nottingham has Ocean, Durham has the infamous Klute, and Cardiff has Retros. But there was always something special about Lounge. It was a haven of cheap drinks, sweaty dancing, and was a place where anything can happen. Nowhere else could wastemen suddenly start singing along to S club seven, and Medics start interacting with other subjects. It was a home for all students, all societies, all socials, and the go to place on Tuesdays.

Therefore, the tragic news of the passing of John Nussbaum, aka John Lounge, will not just change the club, but it will change the very nature of Bristol. We a have lost a person that helped bring us so many memories and good nights. His management turned a room with a dance floor into the social hub of Bristol.

John was a friend to all

Say what you like about Lounge, love or hate it, but everyone you ask at least has had an experience of it, and one which is by and large, always memorable. By this logic, nobody can deny that lounge augmented their university experience. Even if you’re not a fan, it certainly made some of your friends happy. All in all that’s what lounge was, a small, cramped, hilarious slice of happiness. Thus, the impact John lounge had on us will not be forgotten.

Fresher’s will never experience the same Lounge that we did. It is not the look of lounge that will change, or the music. Something will feel different, but hopefully the place will continue to be one of the most special places in Bristol. John lounge’s club will live on in our memories and continue to brighten up our lives for years to come. Raise a £1 VK in honour of this Bristol hero. John we salute you.
