Sheepdog walks from Cumbria to Aber because he missed his home

Pero escaped and walked 240 miles.

Four-year-old working sheepdog Pero fled his new home in Cumbria and made the long journey to Aberystwyth, its birthplace.

Farmers in Cockermouth bought Pero in March as a sheepdog and to help on their farm. But the sheepdog was not happy with his new home and would not settle.

While working on the farm, he escaped and walked all the back back to Aberystwyth to find his former owners Alan and Shan James. It appears the adventurous dog missed the sheep and five children he used to play with at a farm in Penrhyncoch just outside of Aber.

Pero’s return came as a big surprise. Although the James’ knew of Pero’s escape, they did not expect the dog to walk 240 miles all alone.

Mrs James said: “It was a bit of a shock, and the dog was going crazy after seeing Alan.”

“It’s a total mystery as to how Pero has managed to find his way back to us. We know that dogs can find their way home, but 240 miles is a long way to travel.”

The sheepdog has taken good care of himself on his long journey home, as he returned well-fed and in good shape.

“He must have managed to find food somewhere”, said Mrs James. The family asks the public to help find out where the dog has been calling around in search for food.

In the meantime, the family decided to keep Pero.
