Rugby team win the University League

Their first team remains undefeated

The rugby team have gone on to win the league after beating Cardiff and Cardiff Medics in breathtaking matches.

The team faced a tough opponent last Monday when playing Cardiff Uni, the second placed team in the league. However, the men’s team built upon their winning streak of the past months and bagged a staggering 21-3 win against the team – even though, unlike the Aber team, the Cardiff rugby men have coaches and physio staff to support them.

After being banned for several weeks by the Union last year, the team under First Team Captain Owen Daniel Howells turned their game around and beat all opponents during this academic year.

With a 7/7, the men’s team remains undefeated. We spoke to Owen Howells about the hard work the team had put into winning the price.

The months of hard work have paid off

Owen told The Tab: “It’s just amazing, such a brilliant group of boys. We train hard, have fitness sessions 10am every Sunday, followed by two hours of training and more sessions Tuesday and Fridays.

“Teams we play such as Cardiff have such a different set up, they have coaches and physios, when we are lucky if someone remembered to bring the water bottles. Yet after playing against these teams, we blow them away by playing simple yet effective rugby, and we always try and be ten times more physical than them.”

When asked about bringing the team back on track after the University voiced criticism about the team’s practices on socials and outside of training, Owen replied firmly: “It was always going to be hard to bounce back from last year when we got banned for being silly. But I feel we have turned the club around, and getting a step closer to being the respected rugby club we should be. Next stop….smashing varsity. Then we are playing in the semi final of the mid Wales cup, so potentially I could be lifting three trophies this year.”

We wish the team the best of luck during the semi final and in playing for the Mid Wales Cup.
