Aber WiFi severely disrupted after suspected cyber attacks

Surely we’ll get an extension now?

A nationwide cyber attack has left Aber Uni without a properly functioning internet.

Aber Uni’s WiFi is working intermittently after the UK-wide computer network JANET has allegedly been the target of a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) .

Some students may experience serious trouble uploading papers, printing work, or simply connecting to Eduroam.

The network issues have caused mass inconvenience across campus, especially with Christmas deadlines looming and third years having dissertation deadlines this week.

DDos attacks are caused by a mass influx of users and are commonly used by criminals looking to bring a network down.

An Information Services spokesperson said everyone’s network could be at risk, but it does not mean everyone is affected by the attack.

They said: “We’ve been experiencing nationwide problems and there’s little we can do about them.

“Internal sites seem to be running intermittently but could go down again.

“Internal sites seem to be fine but, again, could collapse.”

Tom, a third year working on his dissertation, said: “I understand that the whole network is at risk, but I haven’t experienced any disruptions up here in the library. It just means I have to save more often on the Cloud.”
