Who should pay for dinner on the first date?

So much for gender equality

With rainy, dark winter months ahead of us, going on a date in a cosy café or restaurant is an appealing option to escape the cold of your digs and meet some people other than your flatmates.

You meet up with your flame and have a brilliant time, but at the end of the date you cannot help but wonder: who should pay for the bill?

Sam, Physical Geography, Second year

“I would pay on the first date, definitely. No question about that. I think you have to make a good first impression. It’s important and I think it’s about traditional values.”

Chelsea, Equine Studies, Second year

“I would pay on my first date. Only because I’m at uni and people might not be able to afford it, so I would.”

Mike, Geography, Second year

“It depends on the lady whether I would pay or not. It depends if she’s nice and if I see anything going for me. I need to see how it’s going when I get there.”

Owen, International Politics, Second year

“I would pay on a first date. I’ve been brought up to do it.”

Milly, Veterinary Biology, First year

“I wouldn’t pay. Women should never pay on a date, ever. Men earn more money than women so they can pay.”
