Aber shoots up 150 places in world uni rankings

We’re absolutely killing it

We smashed the QS global uni rankings and got better for the first time in three years.

Overall for world rankings we have began our long climb back to the top with a jump of up to 150 places from last years 601-650 to this years 501-550.

The QS rankings said: “Aberystwyth is a well-established university with a long tradition of academic excellence, but it is also very forward looking.

“It is small enough to be friendly and to allow contact across departments, but big enough to have a wide range of study programmes in professional and vocational subjects.”

In the UK we are placed at 52nd for 2015/16 which is great given our track record for uni rankings recently, with a dismal 110th of 119 in the Guardian’s 2015 league tables.

Professor John Grattan, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Student Experience and International has welcomed the latest league table.

He said: “This considerable improvement in this international league table vindicates the hard work, over the last three years, of our students and our staff in our commitment to student success and research excellence.”

This coupled with earlier this year when the QS World University Rankings by Subject saw five academic subjects at Aberystwyth University feature amongst the world’s elite is really reinstating some of the faith for students at the university.

Oliver Burgon, a third year English student said he was “overwhelmingly surprised and quite chuffed”.

He added: “It’s good to see the university starting repair itself after the last few years and hopefully we the students and staff can continue this return to grace.”

The Uni is absolutely smashing it in several departments at the moment.

International Politics saw its way into the top 150 worldwide, whilst the Geography, Agricultural and Forestry departments also retained their top 150 spot.

Also amazing are the English department for keeping their top 300 spot alongside the Environmental Earth Sciences who for the first time nailed their way into the top 300.

A spokesperson for Aberystwyth uni told The Tab: “There is more good news in key performance areas.

“There has been a significant increase in Citations per Faculty – the number of times research by Aberystwyth academics is referred to in publications by others – and follows the University’s excellent Research Excellence Framework outcome in 2014.”
