An exhaustive ranking of all the Young Sheldon seasons, from worst to best

Season one gets extra points for how adorable the cast were

With a show as funny as Young Sheldon, it is hard to rank exactly what seasons come out on top. Many fans have even said that the show actually got better with time. Usually, a comedy TV series starts out strong and then slowly dwindles due to bad storylines and old jokes – a good example of this would be Glee. However, Young Sheldon developed from season one starting as just a comedy drama to handling complex family dynamics in the final episodes.

Not to mention, it’s harder to do a ranking of the seasons of a show where the characters are growing up like in Young Sheldon because the fans feel they are growing up with them too. Of course, certain storylines have definitely been better than others, such as the CBS spin off show Georgie and Mandy that is being released later this year. Sheldon went through a lot of character development and despite the young being based on him he wasn’t always the most liked.

This ranking is based off more memorable relationship dynamics and whether the writing of the show was strong. Due to the switch in genre, there are definitely seasons that marked the transition of Young Sheldon from a sitcom to family drama making it quite difficult to choose where to place it in the ranking. So with a solid seven season run, here is the ranking of the Young Sheldon seasons from worst to best:

7. Season four

Unfortunately, one of the seasons does have to rank last. With the main plot line being Sheldon graduating high school and Missy starting middle school, I’m just not a fan. A lot of popular characters aren’t in this season as well, such as Sturgis, with a lot of screen time given to less important characters. That said, since season five was quite a shift for the sitcom. This was the start of the awkward transition to a family drama so it feels more of a filler season.

6. Season three

There’s a focus on Sheldon’s education during this season as he enrols with Dr.Sturgis. Ultimately, this leads to the season finale where Sheldon is invited to be a full time student. I wouldn’t say the storylines are the most exciting. There’s also a bit of tension between Sheldon and his mum Mary at the end, with some online theories about his mum being quite controlling. It’s not a standout season if I’m honest.

5. Season five

I’d say this isn’t the best season but still fairly important because the dynamic of the show changed a lot. With the introduction of Mandy there was a lot more drama, Sheldon entered pre-teen phase and became more sassy. The storyline between Meemaw and Sturgis becomes more tense and there’s an important shift, so a lot is happening and the tea is hot.

4. Season one

Now the reason for my season one ranking being high, is for pure nostalgia. I think the first season of any show is always memorable even if it is good or bad. Seeing how young and cute the characters are is part of what makes it memorable, Missy was a standout character in being funny. However, as the seasons got more dramatic Missy became more rebellious. The reason season one worked was the light heartedness but kids do grow up and the writing has to reflect that time jump.

3. Season seven

via CBS

It was so, so close to rank season six and seven. However, I think the emotional finish of the show makes it high on this list as you could see how much the characters have grown. Sometimes, when a show ends there’s a weird cliff hanger feeling but with the Georgie and Mandy spin off, Young Sheldon ended quite naturally without disappointing fans. Apart from the several plot holes but that’s if you are being picky.

2. Season six

via CBS

This season was a lot more family drama such as Mandy giving birth – Emily Osment is a standout character for sure. To add some spice to this season, there was an emotional affair between Mary and George due to martial issues. A special mention to the Germany storyline with Sheldon and Mary. On the whole, the cast reached a peak in season six that was going to be difficult to follow.

1. Season two

Okay, so I did say the show gets better as it goes on but season two is the exception. It’s still a light hearted season but has some memorable storylines such as Sheldon running for president, Georgie and Veronica’s relationship giving “the one who got away” vibes and Connie and Sturgis’s romance.
