Netflix to release new ‘explosive’ Britney Spears conservatorship documentary next week

It uses text messages and voicemails to uncover behind the scenes secrets

One week ahead of her conservatorship hearing, Netflix has announced it has a new documentary coming about Britney Spears. Sharing a trailer for the secret film, it was revealed it will be available to watch worldwide from next week.

The documentary film has a running time of an hour and a half, and is going to be released the day before Britney heads to court. This date is the most significant court date yet, in the ongoing legal battle as she fights for freedom from the conservatorship she has lived under for 13 years. In the guardianship, it is said that Britney’s father, Jamie Spears, has control over aspects of her life and finances and it has caused the huge #FreeBritney campaign online.

The documentary is titled “Britney vs Spears” a play on her battle with her father, and aims to set the record straight regarding what has happened to her, promising “no more secrets”. Britney has accused her father of “conservatorship abuse,” asking a judge to “press charges” against him. In the trailer you can hear Britney saying “I just want my life back”.

The Netflix documentary will tell the story of the conservatorship Britney has been living under and reveal behind the scenes secrets of it

Despite it being a secret to the rest of the world, the Netflix documentary has been in production for over a year. It will focus on the conservatorship, and question its necessity, harshness, the alleged corruption of her father’s involvement and take a wider look at the overall conservatorship laws.

The longer Netflix synopsis reads: “The world knows Britney Spears – performer, artist, icon. But in the last few years, her name has been publicly tied to another, more mysterious term: conservatorship. Britney vs Spears tells the explosive story of Britney’s life and her public and private search for freedom.

“Featuring years-long investigative work, exclusive interviews and new documents, this Netflix feature film paints a thorough portrait of the pop star’s trajectory from girl next door to a woman trapped by fame and family and her own legal status. It shows Britney’s life without utilising the traumatic images that have previously defined her.”

The director of the film, Erin Lee Carr (How To Fix a Drug Scandal, Dirty Money), and journalist Jenny Eliscu work to delve deep into the tangled history of the conservatorship that has been in place for over 13 years. The film weaves a shocking timeline of old and new players, secret rendezvous and Britney’s behind the scenes fight for her own autonomy. Text messages and a voicemail as well as new interviews with key players make clear what Britney herself has attested: the full story has yet to be told.
