The three-part series, by the creators of Don’t F*** With Cats, tells the story of New York City in the 1970s, when it was controlled by five powerful and influential criminal families.

Here’s what Fear City: New York vs The Mafia on Netflix is all about, and what early reviews of the series are saying.

Fear City: New York vs The Mafia is all about five Mafia families and their control over New York City

The series is all about the FBI mission to shut down The Five Families of New York City in the 1970s and 1980s. At the time, the FBI bugged five of the biggest criminal families: The Gambino family, the Genovese family, the Colombo family, the Lucchese family and the Bonanno family. Now, for the very first time, this Netflix Original documentary allows the public to hear these secret tapes and the shocking revelations that came from them.

It includes interviews with former Mafia members turned informants and the FBI, who share their first-hand stories of the Mafia and its grip on the city. There’s also unseen FBI footage and lots of old pictures from the time.

In the 1970s, the Mafia is said to have owned New York City, it was untouchable. The FBI is said to have completely lost control, and it became the “golden era of the mob”. The crimes the Mafia were involved in, such as underworld operations like drug trafficking, loan-sharking and murder, were all known to the law enforcements, but nothing could be done to stop them.

The Netflix synopsis for the show reads: “Five Mafia families ruled New York with a bloody fist in the 1970s and ’80s, until a group of federal agents tried the unthinkable: taking them down.”

Reviews of Fear City on Netflix are already calling it ‘stylish’, ‘lit’ and people are hooked

It looks like Fear City is going to be everyone’s latest binge series, if the reviews are anything to go by. Radio Times described the series as “slick”, “stylish” and “gripping”, adding that it is not just “essential viewing, but it’s also another excellent Netflix documentary”.

Twitter has also said the series is a must watch, with people calling it “tremendous” and describing how they are “already hooked” after just starting.
