Instagram has removed likes and people are ‘furious’ as it will ‘ruin lives’

Cheating boyfriends are going to be able to run wild!!

Instagram is hiding the number of likes on people’s posts as part of a global trial. The trial sees Instagram likes being shown as “and others” instead of the previous numerical value.

The people who have been selected for the trial are randomly chosen accounts and Instagram has not yet confirmed how long the test will last. You will still be able to see the number of likes on your own posts, just not an exact figure on anyone else’s.

How likes are displayed now

Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, tweeted saying: “Today a small portion of people on Instagram worldwide will no longer be able to see the number of likes other people’s photos get. Our hope is to better understand how this idea changes how people feel about using our platform, particularly young people.”

Some people are pretty angry about Instagram likes being removed

A lot of Instagram users have taken to Twitter to show how angry they are about the change. One tweet said: “Where tf are my Instagram likes at?” whilst another said they are “furious”.

One added: “Instagram removing likes is a poor move though, we may now see an influx here on Twitter. Lots of people thrive on social media validation and just like the way people don’t use curious cat again, they may leave IG. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.”

Whereas others think removing Instagram likes is a good idea

One person commented that the removal of likes is “genius”, another said it is their “favourite feature” change since they joined the platform.

It was originally thought the idea was to help with social pressures

Mia Garlick, policy director for Facebook in Australia and New Zealand, said removing Instagram likes was so users would feel less judged. In a statement she said: “We hope this test will remove the pressure of how many likes a post will receive, so you can focus on sharing the things you love”.

Some think it’s because Instagram don’t like how much influencers monetise the platform

But a lot of people think there are other reasons behind the change. On tweet said: “Instagram aren’t removing likes for the sake of anyone’s mental health, I don’t think. I’m sure they aren’t the biggest fans of how much influencers are making off the platform. I’m sure they want a piece if that financial pie too.”

And everyone thinks influencers are going to be ANGRY

Now that Instagram likes are potentially being removed for good, the point has been raised that brands will not be able to tell how engaged influencers’ posts are. And if influencers can’t make as much money, they’re going to be pissed.

How will we know when people have fake followers now?

With the new feature, you will no longer be able to tell the amount of the likes someone gets in comparison to their number of followers. So basically, if someone buys loads of fake followers, you won’t be able to tell anymore.
