Olivia Rodrigo rinsed for sending handwritten letter ‘begging’ Grammy voters to nominate her

Olivia Rodrigo is getting rinsed for a handwritten letter she wrote to Grammy voters to try to convince them to nominate her latest album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, for a Grammy Award. 

If you didn’t know, artists sometimes send promotional packages called “For Your Consideration” boxes to Recording Academy voting members to raise awareness of new music they have submitted to be nominated for a Grammy. Musicians usually send their album, vinyl and various merch alongside a letter ahead of the voting rounds to remind voters of their submission and basically try to influence their vote. 

Loads of people had no idea this process existed until a video of Olivia Rodrigo’s “For Your Consideration” box appeared online this week, and she’s getting teased for being so “beggy” and “desperate”.

Rodrigo sent a box containing a vinyl, a cassette, a cassette player, a digicam, a jumper and loads of other items to promote her new album, which she has submitted for a Grammy. The package also included a handwritten note that’s like a GCSE English essay, where she describes the album and says what her favourite song is.

“I wrote and recorded you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love over the course of two years. It’s the chronological story of a romance, from beginning to end, from “drop dead” to “cigarette smoke”. It’s the journey of my first adult relationship from all the excitement and possibility at the start to the slow unraveling and eventually the heartbreak that came with it,” she said. 

“While making the album, I was thinking about how in a relationship, both the joy and the melancholy can co-exist side by side. It was cathartic for me as a songwriter to explore some of the less obvious feelings that come with falling in love. I had to relive all the anxiety, the longing, the jealousy, the blows and came to realize that falling in love can genuinely make you feel like you’re going insane.”

Rodrigo told Grammy voters that the favourite song she’s ever written is The Cure, and the new album features her “personal hero” Robert Smith, which is a “dream come true”.

“This album encapsulates a pretty formative chapter of my life, and when people who have listened to it share their interpretation of the songs, it fills me with so much pride. That’s really the best thing I could hope for, for these songs to become a part of someone else’s story and help them move forward,” she continued. 

“Thank you so much for listening to this album. I hope you too can find yourself somewhere in these songs & make them your own.”

It’s like she’s telling everyone at school why they should vote for her to be head girl, and people on Twitter are calling her out for being so beggy. “Not her literally begging. The desperation omg,” one person wrote. Another said: “You seem pretty desperate for a girl who acts like she’s nonchalant.” Someone else said: “Girl wrote a whole essay when the music should speak for itself.”

The shade is pretty unfair, because Rodrigo isn’t actually doing anything wrong. Sending “For Your Consideration” boxes is a very normal process for the Grammys, so everyone should be directing their anger at the Recording Academy instead. But the idea of Rodrigo, or any artist for that matter, begging for votes is just hilarious.
