Calling all aspiring journalists! How to join The Bristol Tab

Come to our open meeting on the 28th of September at 8pm at The Beckford (In Senate House)

Want to try something new this year? Into Politics? Obsessed with Gossip? Think Bristol is a personality trait?

Then you should probably join The Bristol Tab.

We are looking for new student writers and content creators to join our team. No previous journalism experience is required, and everyone is welcome; the Tab is open to all Bristol University students, including UoB, UWE and BIMM. Whether you are a fresher looking to join a society and make some new friends or a fourth-year student who desperately needs to give their CV an extra boost.

What is the Tab?

The Tab is a student-led media platform written by students, for students. We cover everything Bristol-related, such as breaking news, city guides and opinion pieces. The stories do not need to be related to campus; you can have the opportunity to write about anything from dating to nights out, and everything in between. You are welcome to pitch your own ideas and investigate stories you are interested in, rather than simply being told what to write.

At The Tab, our articles tend to be split into two categories: features and news. Some examples of feature articles include: The Guide to Forwards Festival outfits, How to get out of your shell and become your best self as a fresher in Bristol, The ultimate Bristol student cooking guide. Some examples of news articles include: Body found in search for missing Bristol student in Romania, Pero’s bridge in Bristol Harbourside has closed after a major structural fault, Bristol anti-immigration protestors released.

The Tab is not just about writing; we also have a big social media presence (make sure to give us a follow!). You can join us in making TikTok and Instagram content such as Vox-pops and Street interviews or other kinds of trending short-form content.

How do I join?

Come along to our open meeting on the 28th of September at 8.00 pm at The Beckford (in Senate House). You do not need to sign up beforehand or have anything prepared; our team will be there to introduce ourselves, explain everything Tab-related, and answer any burning questions you may have.

After the open meeting, we will be having weekly meetings every Tuesday at 6.30 pm at The White Bear. In these meetings, we pitch ideas, discuss what is going on in Bristol, share campus gossip and hand out commissions. There is no pressure to attend every single meeting; come as you like!

What is in it for me?

Becoming a writer for The Tab is the perfect way to start building up your journalism portfolio and gain some useful experience whilst you are at university. It is such a good feeling seeing your name on something that actually gets published. Not only does it look impressive on your CV, but attending meetings is also a great way to meet new people and use your spare time to do something fun and creative. You might uncover an unknown passion for journalism or content creation!
