Here’s how to read police reports and documents from the Idaho murders investigation

The new Netflix documentary The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare has increased interest in the deaths of the students Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Ethan Chapin, and Xana Kernodle. You can actually view many of the documents from the investigation, including interviews with the witnesses and statements from the police. Here’s where to find them.

Many police reports are available to the public

You can read the police reports made by the Idaho State Police during their investigation. The Idaho State Police unsealed their records after Bryan Kohberger was sentenced in July 2025.

Many of these records were referenced in the documentary The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare. For example, you can see the notes from Dylan Mortensen and Bethany Funke’s interviews at the Moscow Police Department about the night of the murders. Dylan described hearing a man say, “It’s okay, I’m gonna help you,” then seeing the stranger leave through the kitchen door.

These documents also include the the statement of Brett Payne – the police officer who first visited the victims’ house after the 911 call. Another report showed that people who were in prison at the same time as Brian Kohberger thought he was “weird”, as he had unusual habits such as showering for “45 minutes to an hour”.

You can also see the search warrant for Bryan Kohberger’s parents’ house

In February 2023, the Pennsylvania State Police’s reports were unsealed. These were the search warrant documents from when the police and the FBI seized weapons and other items from Bryan Kohberger‘s parents’ house in December 2022. These reports show investigators found knives, black clothing and a car matching surveillance footage.
