Frazzled by uni? Here are seven places in Leeds to reclaim the title academic weapon
The libraries are full – and we’re already tired
At the beginning of every semester, we all make promises to ourselves to become an “academic weapon“. Attending every seminar and 9am, doing all our pre-readings, and perhaps even doing coursework early. Yet sticking to it always seems near impossible.
If it’s socials, pub chats, or just procrastination stopping you, here are seven places around Leeds to get you back into the swing of it.
1. Hyde Park Book Club

With its relaxed vibe, Hyde Park Book Club is an essential for all Leeds students. The study area is the perfect place to catch up on missed lecture notes without the quenching silence of Brotherton.
Free wifi, autumnal vibe coffees and a great selection of second-hand books to borrow and buy make it the perfect spot for anyone Hyde Park bound.
2. Bowery

For Headingly-based students, the Bowery is the perfect place to log onto Minerva. Whether it’s matcha or a chai to get you in the zone, the upstairs area in the Bowery is the ideal spot to start that diss research.
Don’t feel awkward about getting your laptop out in here, either; they planned for you to be there!
3. Left Bank

Romanticisation is the key study motivation – whether it’s Rory Gilmore or Elle Woods you’re aspiring to, Left Bank sets the scene.
This renovated church offers a wide selection of affordable food and drinks with enough ambience for you and your mates to squabble over the data hotspot.
4. Tiled Hall Cafe

Based in Leeds Art Gallery, this café follows the theme of picturesque spots for motivation. A wander through the gallery before revision is bound to offer some inspiration, or at least some interesting procrastination.
Too loud for you? The gallery’s library is right upstairs if you need some proper silence, open to all with library etiquette (so not for floor 10 Eddy B users).
5. Hold Fast Bookshop
Carrying on with places in the city centre, this bookshop is situated in Leeds Docks, where the vibes are truly unmatched. A walk down to the docks is the perfect place to clear your head from that early semester dread.
Hold Fast has a great selection of second-hand books and house plants, so whether it’s picking up a new read or buying an emotional study support plant, it’s sure to get you in the academic spirit.
6. Sugarwell Hill

Sick of the walk to Laidlaw? We promise this one is much more cinematic.
The view from Sugarwell is sure to give you that main character moment to get back into the study spirit. With views of the city centre and famous buildings like Parkinson, it is sure to get you back on track.
7. Golden Beam
Such a classic, we just couldn’t keep it off. Affordable food and refillable hot drinks make the Golden Beam an essential study spot. Whether it’s the low-key vibe or how close it is to home, this is the perfect spot to lock in.
With more seats than your lecture theatres, Spoons has you covered. Just don’t get distracted by the pitchers – although we know it’s tempting.
