Here are some of the wild things Lancaster students want to replace LUSU Shop with
Our future Co-op has a lot of potential
Since LUSU Shop announced its closure in July, the mystery surrounding its replacement has been creating a buzz for Lancaster students.
It was recently revealed that the empty lot is turning into a Co-op Food, which will be extremely useful for those of us on South Campus. However, we’re still dreaming about what the emptiness could have been. We asked Lancaster University students what they think LUSU Shop should have been turned into, and the answers were incredible.
Double whammy
Your answers included a second Coastal & Co, Greggs or Sultans. Or as one student put it: “LUSU Shop two: Electric Boogaloo”.
So, it seems that Lancs students are creatures of habit and are big fans of what we already have on campus. Can you blame us?
Another Coastal and Greggs would definitely be useful for a LUMS lunch break. You’d avoid battling the South Spine between lectures AND avoid the queues in Alex Square. Also, you can never have enough Sultans, so another one would be idyllic.
Entertainment venues
Your answers included: Karaoke bar, arcade or bowling alley.
Work hard, play harder. We had an abundance of responses suggesting that the ex-grocery store could become something a lot more fun.
Whilst we’re not too sure that the LUSU Shop lot is big enough for a bowling alley, it doesn’t hurt to dream about late-night flat strikes and spares. A standalone karaoke bar would be equally as crazy. The demand for karaoke in Lancaster is unbelievably high, and if Treveoke in Furness Bar is anything to go by, it would be a hit.
A costume shop

When we first received this response, we thought it was a little rogue. But, with some thought, it actually makes a lot of sense.
Why buy the outfits you need for your society socials on Amazon when you can just pop into your uni’s very own costume shop instead? Societies rejoice! However, this might cause some congestion, and it would not be enjoyable to have to battle the queue on a Wednesday afternoon when people remember the most crucial part of their outfit is missing.
…More food?
Your answers included: “McDonald’s”, “chicken and chips shop” and “Domino’s”.
Lancaster’s campus already has an abundance of food outlets, but for some of our responders, they’re just not cutting it. A campus McDonald’s was in very high demand, and there were also a few calls for a Domino’s Pizza. One response asked for a “chicken and chips shop”, but we think that KC’s already has that covered.
With absolutely no research basis whatsoever, we predict that a 24/7 McDonald’s on campus would make more profit than every other food outlet combined, especially in exam season. However, for our health, we’re glad we don’t have the temptation to get that midnight Maccies.
Wetherspoons
Incredible. What a choice. We’d simply never leave. Imagine the vibes before a club night, the daytime studying with the free hot drink refills, ordering on the app as you leave your flat, then arriving at your table to a hot meal. It would be the absolute dream.
It would, however, be unbearably busy at all times.
Lancaster Tab HQ
Now this is what we’re talking about. Until this happens, we’re currently holding our meetings upstairs in Pendle (Harpley Lounge) every Tuesday at 6pm. Cheeky promotion for you all, you’re welcome.
Aldi special aisle
You thought Spoons was a good idea? Well, one responder harnessed their inner genius and suggested the empty LUSU Shop lot should have become the middle aisle of Aldi. We’d end up with queues out of the door waiting for the next drop every Thursday and Sunday. Catch us there.
The new South Campus Co-op Food opens in November.
