Gals, now you can pay a little bit extra to avoid the most annoying thing on a flight

Flying just got a lot more comfortable

The most annoying thing about flying is having a child sing Moana to you mid-flight or having to sit next to someone. No space, no privacy, and forget about stretching your legs.

But now, there’s a way to avoid this nightmare altogether. According to Metro, Virgin Australia has introduced a new “Neighbour-Free Seating” option that lets you pay a little extra to make sure the seat next to you stays empty.

It sounds a bit fancy, but it’s definitely a game-changer. Not only do you get extra space, but you also get a little slice of peace and quiet, which is priceless when you’re trying to nap or watch a show.

So, here’s how to make sure your flight is neighbour-free

  • Book your flight online: Make sure you’ve got your seat sorted first.
  • Open the Virgin Australia app: This is where the magic happens.
  • Place your bid: You’ll pay a minimum of $30 (£14.73) to try and keep that seat empty.
  • Wait for confirmation: If your bid is accepted, you’ll get an email up to two hours before take-off.
  • Enjoy the extra space: Sit back, relax, and maybe even stretch your legs for once.

If you’re thinking of stashing your extra luggage in the empty seat, forget it. For safety reasons, you can only use the space to sit and maybe rest your feet. Also, your bid isn’t 100 per cent guaranteed. Sometimes the seat might be needed for operational or safety reasons or to accommodate other passengers. If that happens, you’ll get an email at least four hours prior to take off, and a full refund.

At the moment, this is only for economy passengers on certain Virgin Australia routes, like Melbourne to Sydney or Brisbane to Cairns. Fancy seats like Economy X or Business Class aren’t included because, obviously, you’re already getting more space there.

Virgin Australia says this feature is all about giving passengers more choice and comfort. And honestly, it works. No one wants to be squished next to a stranger for hours. Now, you can pay a little extra and fly in peace, without breaking the bank.
