The new Instagram update is causing chaos and has moved DMs – here’s where they’ll be
The muscle memory of my thumb is freaking out
A new Instagram is upon us and this one is changing something big and it’s going to change how the app looks – especially for those of us in the UK. We’ve all got so used to where everything is by now that your muscle memory is probably locked into clicking on the right bits to get to where you need to get to without you really even having to think about it. Now that Instagram has announced it has an active three billion users worldwide, with the update of its users comes a big update to app layout and it’s rolling out in the UK right now. Here’s all the Instagram update changes and why it’s happening – so you know where to look to get to DMs in the new layout era.
Here’s what’s going on
It’s all going on on Reels, as we well know, and because of Instagram growth the app has declared big changes to how the layout is in order to prioritise the things that got them that growth. These being, in their eyes, recommendations, DMs and Reels. In an announcement, Instagram head Adam Mosseri said “If you look at the last few years, almost all of that growth has been driven by DMs, Reels, and recommendations.”

Right now, if you swipe right on Instagram you’ll land in your DMs; swipe left and you’ll be prompted to post a story. Along the bottom, the navigation bar takes you to the home page, the search/explore page, the post creation button, Reels, and your profile. But that setup isn’t sticking around for long.

Over the next few months, Instagram is reshuffling things. The new bottom bar will include home, Reels, DMs, search/explore, and your profile — but the dedicated posting button is disappearing. You’ll still be able to make posts, but you’ll need to tap in the top left corner instead.
On top of that, Instagram is testing a feature that lets you properly tune your algorithm. “A new way for you to tune your algorithm by adding and removing topics based on your interests, starting with Reels,” Adam Mosseri explained. Basically, you’ll be able to go into settings, see what the app thinks you’re into, and then edit it to reflect your actual interests.
“Really excited for all that’s to come. Thank you for being on the journey with us and making Instagram so special. 🙏🏼,” Mosseri added.
So get ready to no longer swiping to the right to get your DMs – that’s all that you need to know about the Instagram update to layout.
