10-year-old reveals the devastating way his friend saved his life during Minneapolis shooting

His friend Victor was shot in the back as a result

A 10-year-old boy has recalled the terrifying moment his friend saved his life during the school shooting at Annunciation Church in Minneapolis earlier this week.

At 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 27, 23-year-old Robin Westman walked into the Minneapolis, Minnesota, church, where children had been attending a worship service during their first week of school. Using a rifle, a shotgun, and a pistol, Robin killed an eight-year-old, a 10-year-old and injured 17 more. 14 of those injured were also kids, and the three adults were all parishioners in their 80s.

“These were Minneapolis families,” Mayor Jacob Frey said during a briefing. “These were American families, and the amount of pain they are suffering right now is extraordinary.”

Weston Halsne, a 10-year-old student who had been attending the Catholic service, was saved by his friend Victor when “he laid on top of me.”

“I was like two seats away from the stained glass window. My friend, Victor, saved me though, because he laid on top of me, but he got hit,” he told CBS affiliate WCCO. “My friend got hit in the back, he went to the hospital… I was super scared for him but I think now he’s okay.”

Weston’s TV interview has since been posted to Instagram by CBS, where people argued that it was “Words no student should ever have to speak.”

“Absolutely sobbing. God bless his friend. NO child should have to go through this,” one person wrote.

Another said: “341st mass shooting in America this year. Why are we pretending nothing can be done to better protect our children? Shame on America.”

Robin Westman died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene.

Donald Trump has since responded to the Minneapolis school shooting

Politicians from both the Republican and Democratic parties have been responding, with Donald Trump issuing a proclamation through the White House’s official website.

He wrote: “As a mark of respect for the victims of the senseless acts of violence perpetrated on August 27, 2025, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, by the authority vested in me as President of the United States by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, August 31, 2025.

“I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same length of time at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and ‘naval vessels and stations.”

Robin Westman’s rifle had “Kill Donald Trump” and “Kill Trump Now” etched into it.
