Tragic new details have emerged about the cause of death of former music manager and Kelly Clarkson’s ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock, who passed away on August 7 at the age of 48.
Blackstock, a devoted father of four, spent his final years in Butte, Montana, surrounded by family. His obituary emphasised his unwavering devotion to his children, describing them as his “greatest love and his greatest legacy.”
In the days leading up to his passing, Kelly Clarkson postponed several shows in her Las Vegas residency to be “fully present” for their children, River Rose, 11, and Remington “Remy” Alexander, nine. She also cancelled a benefit concert in Texas, citing “personal circumstances.”
Blackstock never spoke publicly about his illness before he died. However, Kelly Clarkson revealed on Wednesday, August 6, that he “had been ill.” A statement shared by his family confirmed that he had been “battling cancer for more than three years” before his passing last week.

Blackstock’s passing was announced on August 7. But the full extent of his health struggles has only recently come to light. According to his death certificate, obtained by PEOPLE, Blackstock died of natural causes after a three-year battle with melanoma, a malignant form of skin cancer.
The records also note that he suffered multiple seizures in his final days. They were listed as “significant conditions contributing to death but not resulting in the underlying cause.” No autopsy was performed, and he was cremated at his home in Montana.
Brandon Blackstock is survived by his four children: Savannah, 23, and Seth, 18, from his first marriage, and River and Remy with Kelly Clarkson. His obituary further described his family life. It stated, “Never did his star shine brighter than in his role as a father. Nothing mattered to Brandon more than his four beautiful children.”
