The reason police are ‘rushing’ to find fresh evidence as new Madeleine McCann search launches
It’s set to start this week, with one primary goal in mind
Despite £13 million in funds, countless new searches, international assistance, and several suspects, police are no closer to finding Madeleine McCann than they were on that fateful night in 2007. Nonetheless, nearly 20 years after she went missing, police in Portugal are gearing up to launch another search in the area where she was last seen, Praia da Luz.
The search grid is located between Praia da Luz and a house near the holiday resort where the police’s primary suspect used to live. It’s expected to last three days unless new evidence is discovered.
‘They will be land searches only,” he said, according to Metro. “The main objective is to look for any signs of Madeleine’s body.”

This will officially be the first new Madeleine McCann search in two years, with the last happening in 2023 when local and German officials searched Arade Dam. The area was dubbed the suspect’s “little paradise”, but it tragically came to nothing. Before that, British police spearheaded a search using ground-penetrating radar and sniffer dogs during a 2014 dig in the area.
But why now? Why, after 18 years, are police setting out on another new search for Madeleine McCann? It has everything to do with their chief suspect, Christian Brueckner.
Why are they starting a new search for Madeleine McCann?
To understand why the new search is being conducted now, we first have to go back to Christian Brueckner, the man German police believe is responsible for the disappearance of Madeleine McCann. He is currently serving a seven-year sentence for rape in Germany, and when he’s released in september, prosecutors are pretty certain he’s going to flee to the country.

A source close to the case earlier told The Sun: “Brueckner’s lawyers know they need to go for this now, in case an appeal against his acquittal is allowed. That will create a new arrest warrant, and he’ll be stuck behind bars. Madeleine prosecutors still have firepower they can rely on – but they are nervous.
“As soon as Brueckner is free he will disappear and likely never be seen again. We’ve seen it time and time again over the years with other offences – and even his own lawyers have said it. He cannot be released. That would mean disaster for the McCann case and parents Gerry and Kate.”

Predicting Christian’s own disappearance once he’s out from behind bars, German officials requested another search from their Portuguese counterparts. They are reportedly also hopeful that British police officers will reopen their own investigation into Christian before he’s released in just 18 weeks.
The new search for Madeleine McCann is set to commence on June 3.
