What the police have said about the new hard drive evidence in the Maddie McCann doc

It’s been claimed the hard drive may contain evidence

German police have responded to media claims that a hard drive discovery linked to the Madeleine McCann case shows evidence the missing girl is dead, firmly stating there’s nothing new to report.

The comments come after the Channel 4 documentary Madeleine McCann: The Unseen Evidence aired on Wednesday, May 7, drawing public attention with suggestions that it would reveal shocking material connected to Christian Brueckner, the main suspect in the case.

What was in the documentary?

The documentary revisited items found by German police at a remote property reportedly bought by Brueckner in 2008, a year after Madeleine McCann disappeared in Portugal. Among the items were children’s clothing, toys, 75 swimsuits, and disturbing digital material stored on USB sticks and memory cards. Some of these were allegedly hidden under a dead dog.

The Sun suggested that one of the hard drives uncovered could contain evidence that Madeleine is dead. Although the programme itself did not show any direct proof of that. The content of the digital files remains undisclosed to the public.

German police shut down speculation

In the wake of the documentary, Braunschweig police were quick to distance themselves from the speculation. Speaking to LADbible, a police spokesperson said, “I can’t comment on the documentary because I haven’t seen it. In my opinion, the article in The Sun doesn’t contain any real news and also contains few direct references to Madeleine McCann.”

They suggested the timing of the report, just before Madeleine’s 18th anniversary, aimed to draw attention rather than reveal new developments.

Is this actually a breakthrough?

Despite the buzz, there’s no confirmation from police or prosecutors that the hard drive contains any new evidence directly linking Brueckner to Madeleine’s fate. Authorities continue to treat him as a suspect, he denies involvement, and they have not charged him in connection with the case.
