Omg! Billie Piper pegged as the next Doctor Who after Ncuti Gatwa’s exit, here’s why

Okay, it actually makes a lot of sense

It’s believed that Ncuti Gatwa is fast approaching the end of his tenure in Doctor Who, and while booking agents are currently placing bets on who will take up the mantle, rumours have begun to swirl about Billie Piper potentially returning to the franchise.

Look, I’m not going to pretend that Russell T Davies’ return to Doctor Who has been all sunshine and roses. It’s obviously not as popular as those golden years, but the idea that it’s tanked because of “woke” storylines is just ridiculous. Doctor Who has, and always will be, inherently political – get used to it!

Nasty rumours aside, it’s believed that Ncuti Gatwa’s doctor will regenerate by the end of his second season, with another actor taking up the role. Modern iterations have seen Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, and Jodie Whittaker, but people think a familiar face might be stepping into the role.

Why do people think Billie Piper is returning to Doctor Who?

The rumour mill is spinning this week ahead of the finale few episodes of Doctor Who and what is believed to be the end of Ncuti Gatwa’s stint as the Time Lord. A bunch of actors have been teased as possible replacements, but all of a sudden, people on Reddit are convinced Billie Piper is returning.

“Has anyone else seen the wild rumours floating around that Billie Piper might be cast as the 16th Doctor? As much as I’m struggling to believe it, if it does turn out to be true, how would everyone feel? Personally, I wouldn’t be on board with the idea at all, in fact I would hate it,” one person said.

“Casting Billie Piper would feel like yet another gimmick, much like bringing back David Tennant did. The role of the Doctor should be treated with more care than just trying to generate the biggest online buzz.”

Billie Piper

Other people seem very keen, as one person explained: “I’d probably watch it just because it’s Billie. She was why I started watching in the first place. Love that lady.”

“I’d be delighted. I doubt very much that she will be though,” another said.

Hold on, but where did the rumours actually start?

According to Cinemablend, Sci-Fi & Fantasy Gazette passed along information that bigwigs are the BBC are considering Billie Piper’s return to the Doctor Who franchise. Another piece of so-called evidence allegedly came from a Disney+ email sent to subscribers in Spain, showing Billie Piper’s eyes glowing as if she had just regenerated.

It’s certainly been enough to ignite speculation, and though it would seem like a desperate attempt to claw back the popularity of Doctor Who in the early 2000s, it’s not completely out of the question.

As we saw when Peter Capaldi stepped into the role, The Doctor sometimes regenerates into a face he needs to learn a lesson from. It was basically a neat bit of lore to explain why Peter Capaldi had been in Doctor Who twice, the first being season four’s The Fires of Pompeii, but it could work again to explain why The Doctor looks like one of his companions.

Make it happen, I will never say no to more Billie Piper!
