Lip reader reveals what Pedro Pascal really told Joaquin Phoenix at Cannes

Pedro had just one warning for his co-star

Pedro Pascal and Joaquin Phoenix were caught in an awkward exchange during the Cannes premiere of their film Eddington. The incident took place on the red carpet on Friday, where the actors were attending the debut of Ari Aster’s upcoming film. In a clip that quickly went viral, Joaquin Phoenix is seen waving to people before Pedro Pascal steps in and pulls his arm down. The brief interaction sparked widespread speculation online, with many suggesting the gesture may have unintentionally resembled a Nazi salute.

Now, a professional lip reader has revealed exactly what Pedro Pascal told Joaquin at Cannes.

So, what did Pedro actually say?

According to lip reader NJ Hickling, speaking to Daily Mail, at Cannes, Pedro Pascal leaned in and quietly told Joaquin Phoenix, “Argh, don’t do that. You’re affecting the cred. Try and act cool, like you’re about to score, my man.”

The moment came just after Joaquin raised his hand in a wide wave to the crowd. Pedro appeared to quickly pull it down, sparking speculation online about the gesture.

Some viewers thought the wave might have looked too straight-armed, with a few even suggesting it risked being misinterpreted.

So, what was Joaquin’s response?

The lip reader said Joaquin took a beat, then mouthed, “Oh, enough.” He followed it with a quieter, almost to-himself, “Oh my goodness.”

The moment passed quickly, but it didn’t go unnoticed. Pedro grinned, and the two continued posing for photos.

‘Pedro just saved him’

Clips of the exchange went viral on X and Instagram.

“Pedro just saved Joaquin’s entire career,” one person joked. Another added, “Joaquin was really enjoying that wave until he got told he looked like a Nazi.”

Others praised Pascal for his quick thinking, while some felt the moment was over-analysed. “It was just a wave,” one Instagram user wrote. “Nothing more.”
