YOU season five exposes another ridiculous plot hole that began in season one

Throughout much of season one, and subsequently the fifth and final season, Mooney’s bookstore serves as one of the primary settings of Netflix’s YOU. Joe Goldberg was practically raised there, and in adulthood, it acts as his base of operations for his various nefarious schemes and plans. We as the viewers spend an awful lot of time there, so why did it take us so long to spot this error that was born back in 2018’s season one?

In episode nine of YOU’s season five, aptly named Trial of the Furies, Kate, Nadia, and Marienne flip the script on Joe and have him locked up in the very cage he held them in. Though he does eventually manage to escape, thanks to a handy spare key he stitched into his arm, Anna Camp’s Maddie Lockwood soon locks him and Kate in there whilst setting fire to the building. It’s looking like a fiery end to the married couple until Bronte comes to Joe’s rescue – but it didn’t have to be that way.

As pointed out by people on both TikTok and Reddit, Mooney’s has a backdoor or side entrance that we see Joe himself use back in season one. To my knowledge, the door is never referenced or used again, and I can’t help but wonder how many moments could have been avoided by using the sneaky entrance. In season five alone, Joe and Kate could have escaped the fire.

“If you guys noticed in s1 Joe brought Benji into the prison through a back door, but now in s5 when the bookstore was on fire, why didn’t Joe think to use that? The door just vanished from the plot after that one episode,” one person said on Reddit.

Someone else did point out that there could be a reason it wasn’t used, explaining: “Bc Kate closed it down like every entrance remember she like closed it so they chained up everything.”

There’s another plot hole about Mooney’s in YOU

Mooney’s is apparently ground zero for YOU plot holes because other people have questioned how they managed to film a live stream in the basement when *apparently* there’s no signal down there. It’s a fact we learn over and over again when Joe locks up an unsuspecting victim.

“Even though they’ve established that you get no service in the basement this season and MANY times in previous seasons (with Brontë getting stuck and not being able to call Joe), the livestream conveniently has stellar service when they make an impromptu trip down there?” someone wrote on Reddit.
