Awhina reveals why she went on MAFS so soon after splitting from the father of her son
She said her life was ‘missing something’ before MAFS
MAFS Australia bride Awhina Rutene shocked her husband Adrian Araouzou when she revealed the existence of her young son hours after their nuptials on the reality TV show. Adrian seemed a little put off at first, and while he did have reservations about dating a mum, he claimed it wasn’t a deal breaker for him, not that anyone actually believed him.
Though we still have a good chunk of the season to go before the explosive reunion, we as viewers don’t get to meet Awhina’s son and neither did Adrian.
“But I’ve never introduced anyone I’ve been intimate with to my son before, and there was no way we were at a place that we were strong enough, or our connection was strong enough to kind of introduce him to my son,” Awhina explained. “And at this stage, I didn’t know if it ever would be.”
There is little information available about Awhina’s earliest relationship, but in a new interview with podcaster Joshua Fox, she did reveal a few juicy tidbits.

Joshua Fox, the man behind challenging expert John Aiken and petitioning for Katie Johnston’s return, recently sat down with Awhina to talk about her season of MAFS, her relationship with Adrian, and her 6-year-old son.
Speaking about joining MAFS after breaking things off with the unnamed father of her kid, Awhina recalled feeling as though people were living their lives in a different way to her. As they were out there dating, partying, and getting “wild”, she was changing diapers and bottle feeding.
“I felt like I had missed out on something,” she said. “Like everyone else had gone wild.”

Awhina then revealed that she met the father of her son when she was in school, at the age of 15. He gave her an “amazing” baby in 2019, nine years after they first met at school, but she felt like she was lacking the excitement she needed.
“I thought ‘I’m missing out on something here.’ I need excitement, I need something, I need to catch up on the rest of the world,” she added. “And then MAFS fell into my lap almost, and I’m thankful for it. I think a lot of people, after a long-term breakup, spend years chasing something. I had three months and then I left the experiment and thought ‘Holy f**k my life is so great’.”
Ultimately, MAFS Australia taught Awhina that everything she needs is already at home: A beautiful house, a beautiful family, and one amazing son.
