‘Disgusting’: All the celebs who have slammed the Blue Origin trip to space

‘A bit gluttonous’

If you’ve ever felt painfully out of touch, just know that yesterday (April 14), Katy Perry was floating in zero gravity, singing “What a Wonderful World,” while you were scraping the last of your grocery budget together for week-old pasta. That’s the vibe of Blue Origin’s first-ever all-female spaceflight — a shiny, Bezos-backed, PR-glazed rocket ride that made headlines for all the wrong reasons. Yes, it was historic. Yes, it was a win for women in STEM. But let’s be honest: This thing cost between $64 million and $88 million per seat. That’s half a billion dollars for 11 minutes in the sky. Four of those were actually spent in space. No research, no experiments — just vibes, gravity tricks, and a vocal performance. All while the rest of us are wondering, “How many plastic cups do we have to recycle to reverse this?”

While the launch was supposed to be a milestone moment for women in science, it’s quickly turned into a meme factory — because, frankly, the celebrity commentary has been brutal. The Katy Perry space flight was slammed by celebs all over social media.

Emily Ratajkowski

Emily Ratajkowski didn’t mince words on TikTok, saying the whole thing was “beyond parody” and felt like a sign of the end times.  She questioned how anyone could frame the launch as eco-conscious while it was bankrolled by a company she says is “single-handedly destroying the planet.” Then she really let it rip, calling the stunt “disgusting” and demanding to know what the actual point was.

“Look at the state of the world,” she said. “Think about how many resources went into sending these women into space — for what? What was the marketing angle there? I’m literally disgusted.”

Olivia Munn

On Today with Jenna and Friends, Olivia Munn didn’t even pretend to play nice. “I know this probably isn’t the cool thing to say,” she started (always a good sign), “but there are people who can’t even afford eggs.” She called the launch “gluttonous” and questioned what exactly the point of it all was. “Is it historic that you guys are going on a ride?” she said. “What are they going to do up there that’s made it better for us down here?”

Amy Schumer

Amy Schumer, chaos queen that she is, trolled the entire thing on her Instagram story. Holding what looked like a Black Panther toy she pulled out of her bag, she said, “I’m bringing this thing. It had no meaning to me, but it was in my bag and I got a text like, ‘Do you wanna go to space?’ And I’m going to space.” She thanked “my guiding lights — Perry, Sánchez, Nguyen” and then proceeded to roast the literal word “space.” “How high were the people who came up with the name? ‘There’s so much space.’ ‘That’s it.’ That’s what we’re going with?”

Olivia Wilde

Meanwhile, Olivia Wilde went the minimalist route, sharing a photo of Katy Perry in the capsule with the caption:

“Billion dollars bought some good memes I guess.”

But Gayle King isn’t laughing

Gayle King, one of the women on the flight, defended the Katy Perry space flight mission in an interview with People, saying critics “don’t really understand what’s happening here.” She emphasised the mission’s impact on young girls and the thousands of engineers behind the scenes. “I get really fired up,” she said. “I’d love for the critics to come to Blue Origin and see the heart and soul that goes into this.”

Totally fair. But also, no one’s denying that women belong in space. Representation matters, and celebrating female scientists and engineers is long overdue. Still, when the Katy Perry space flight costs more than most countries’ education budgets — and ends up looking more like a TikTok-ready spectacle than a scientific mission — it’s no wonder celebs slammed it. Especially when they’re funny, influential, and also trying to make rent back on Earth.
