She’s off today! Here’s exactly how Katy Perry has prepared for her trip to space

She’s done loads of training and has shared her morning routine in the lead up

It’s happening. Today, Katy Perry makes her long-awaited trip to space. That’s not a sentence I ever expected to be real. Today (April 14th) Katy Perry will be onboard the New Shepard rocket as part of an all-female crew, heading out to space.

The rocket is a Blue Origin rocket, and Katy will be joined by journalist Gayle King, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, bioastronautics research scientist and civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, filmmaker Kerianne Flynn and journalist and helicopter pilot Lauren Sánchez – who is engaged to Blue Origin owner, Jeff Bezos. They are reportedly the first all-female crew since 1963.

The flight is set to take off at 8.30am local time, or 2.30pm BST. The flight itself will last only around 11 minutes, and reach a height of about 65 miles above Earth. But, that hasn’t stopped Katy putting lots into her prep.

So, how has Katy Perry prepared for her trip to space?

The crew members have each spoken out about how they are preparing, and the advise they have given each other. Gayle King told ELLE she has been learning to meditate, to help ease her anxiety. “I’m starting to meditate. I tried it years ago,” she explained “I have some sessions planned before we go up just to help me.”

The crew members also had the chance to complete space simulations, as well as zero-gravity simulation flights. Together, the crew headed to the launch site in Van Horn, Texas, for final training sessions.

According to ABC, day one of the training was focused on getting the women fitted in customised flight suits, and acclimated to the capsule in which they will fly. They got to test out where they would be sitting in the rocket, as well as getting name tags and patches to identify their seats.

The crew have had sessions with Blue Origin staff to go through exactly what the flight will feel and sound like. They have also learned two very important phrases, that they need to say in emergencies or if they feel uncomfortable. The crew must say “time-out” and “I will not fly” in these situations. They have up to the last two and half minutes before take off to utter “I will not fly” if they want to cancel their voyage.

Katy has been giving herself daily affirmations

Katy told Associated Press how she has been preparing with herself, to get her ready. “I am talking to myself every day and going, ‘You’re brave, you’re bold, you are doing this for the next generation to inspire so many different people but especially young girls to go, ‘I’ll go to space in the future.’ No limitations,” she said.

She added: “I’m really excited about the engineering of it all. I’m excited to learn more about STEM and just the math about what it takes to accomplish this type of thing.”

Katy Perry has a small allowance of what she can bring to space, but she’s using it

The women are only in space for 11 minutes, and have a small allowance three pound weight limit. Katy said she wants to pack something sentimental, “to remind us how precious the Earth is.”
