This is how many years in prison Rex Heuermann could be facing if he’s found guilty

Rex Heuermann is the subject of Netflix’s latest true crime documentary, and he could be facing an extreme prison sentence if he’s found guilty.

The three-part docuseries about the Long Island serial killer ends with the arrest of the 59-year-old in 2023, and his trial is due to take place very soon.

He has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder and five counts of second-degree murder in total, the BBC reports.

Heuermann has been charged in the state of New York, where a first-degree murder carries a sentence of 20 to 40 years in jail or life imprisonment without parole.

In the state, being found guilty of second-degree murder carries a sentence of life with parole or 15 years in prison.

This means Rex is facing a minimum of 135 years in jail if he is found guilty of all seven charges. He could also get life in prison without the chance of parole.

Either way, he would be spending the rest of his life behind bars as he is 59. The average life expectancy for a man in the US is 77 years old.

So, even if he is found guilty of just one or two of the seven murder charges, he will likely be spending the rest of his life in a prison cell.

In New York, murder charges do not carry the death penalty, so Heuermann won’t be facing this.

The death penalty was abolished at state level in New York in 2004. However, it can still be used for federal sentences, such as capital crimes or killing a law enforce­ment offi­cer.

Heuermann has pleaded not guilty to all of these charges and the case is heading towards trial, with the pre-trial hearing taking place last week.

“He’s looking forward to fighting these charges and we’re doing that,” his attorney Michael Brown told reporters.

The suspect is currently being held at the Riverhead Correctional Facility in Suffolk County, New York, where he has been ever since his arrest.

A spokesperson for the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office told Today that he is expected to remain at the facility while legal proceedings continue.
