‘I did all the work’: Here are Exeter University students’ WORST group project experiences

‘Group project’, two words no student wants to hear

There comes a time in every uni student’s degree when they are faced with the dreaded group project.

For some, it’s an excuse to yap with friends and pull the inevitable all nighter the day before it’s due. For others, it’s an excuse to do nothing, then show up and take all the credit.

It’s a super frustrating task that all students must conquer. So, in honour of deadline season, we decided to ask Exeter Uni students their WORST group project stories.

Whether you love them or hate them, we all know that group projects can easily head South. Especially when they leave you with a bad grade and a deep-rooted hatred for your coursemates for the rest of the year…

‘One of our group members went on holiday the week it was due’

Realistically, most of us do the main work for the group project the week it’s due like true procrastinators, so this holiday was no coincidence. This was carefully plotted escape from responsibility.

You have to admire the dedication to avoiding work.

Instead of just locking in with your laptop in the library, you pay over a grand to gallivant abroad. I’m sure they were enjoying their project at least.

‘I did ALL. THE. WORK. Painful’

To whoever starting marking groups as groups instead of marking individuals, respectfully, I hate you.

In nearly every group project, there is always one person who does all the work and one who doesn’t do anything at all. For this student, they had to produce a film, so they were producing, filming and editing all on her own. Must’ve been brutal. Only the strongest soldiers survive the toughest battles.

‘Turns out I’ve been calling her another member’s name for two years…’

Yikes, this is awkward. One student wrote that they “made good friends with one member” and discovered that, two years later, she had “been calling her another member’s name”.

When you think you are in a decent group just to find out YOU are bad member… Shocking how no one corrected them, though. Two years is a very long time, she might as well apply for a name change now.

‘One guy ignored ALL messaged in the group chat…’

And just to add salt to the wound… they “didn’t turn up to anything apart from the final record”. At least he eventually showed up, I guess?

‘She refused to do her part and got mad at us…’

This student said they sent “repeated emails asking her to do her work, then when she got marked down, she appealed the mark and still lost.” Karma, eh? Some people really have the audacity. In situations like this, you should really be marked individually. But hopefully she learned her lesson…
