The chunky wages of The Electric State cast and the colossal amount of money it cost Netflix
It’s Netflix’s most expensive film to date
The Electric State is currently sitting at number one on the Netflix film chart, and it’s a good thing too because the film cost a huge amount of money to make and its star-studded cast won’t be going hungry for years.
Anthony and Joe Russo, the creative geniuses behind Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, have diversified their IMDb in recent years with The Gray Man, Extraction 2, Everything Everywhere All at Once, and now The Electric State. It is loosely based on the 2018 illustrated novel by Simon Stålenhag.
The official Netflix description reads: “An orphaned teen hits the road with a mysterious robot to find her long-lost brother, teaming up with a smuggler and his wisecracking sidekick.”
The flick stars Netflix’s favourite starlet Millie Bobby Brown Bongiovi, Chris Pratt, Ke Huy Quan, Stanley Tucci, Woody Harrelson, Anthony Mackie, Michelle Yeoh, and about 50 other really recognisable names. So its success is practically guaranteed, right? Turns out, not so much as it’s being trashed in reviews with 14 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes.
The new project has some serious ground to cover if it wants to break even – take a look.
What was the budget of The Electric State?
Over the years we’ve seen some truly expensive Netflix projects, from the $150 million spent on 6 Underground to the $200 million splashed on The Gray Man. Well, The Electric State blows them all out of the water and it’s now Netflix’s most spenny movie.
Though it’s yet to be confirmed by officials at Netflix, everywhere from the BBC to Forbes is reporting that The Electric State’s budget was a staggering $320 million!

For reference, and to understand just how crazy that number is, let’s take a look at some of the more expensive movies in Hollywood history:
- Avengers: Endgame – $356 million
- Avatar – $237 million
- Star Wars: The Force Awakens – $447 million and the MOST expensive movie in history

How much did the cast get paid by Netflix?
Millie Bobby Brown has been banking hard-earned cash from Netflix for nearly a decade and The Electric State is no different. According to Spoiler, she was paid a cushty $5 million for the project which is starkly lower than her solo projects such as Damsel.
Meanwhile, Jurassic World frontman Chris Pratt was reportedly paid $20 million, Brian Cox $1 million, Stanley Tucci $700,000, Martin Klebba $500,000, Ke Huy Quan $250,000, Jenny Slate $350,000, and Woody Norman $80,000.
In some of Millie Bobby Brown’s earlier projects, she was guaranteed a lump sum and then given up to $3 million more after release. This pay bump was very much dependent on the film’s success so they might not be getting one if The Electric State continues to bomb.
