The real reason Dave broke up with his girlfriend before MAFS speaks volumes to his character

Gentle giant Dave Hand has been an absolute angel on MAFS Australia so far, and after learning why he broke up with an earlier girlfriend, I’m certain he’s the most relatable member of the 2025 cast.

Dave, who is tattooed head to toe, is currently married to Jamie Marinos and they might just be the most stable relationship in the experiment – let’s hope it stays that way. But before marital bliss, both Jamie and Dave were unlucky in love which is why they joined TV’s most explosive dating show.

We don’t know an awful lot about their prior relationships, which is probably a good thing because Tim Gromie’s former flames have come back to haunt him, but now Dave has revealed why he broke up with a girlfriend prior to going on the show.

I might be jinxing the rest of the series but Dave is easily the biggest green flag in Married at First Sight Australia and his recently released audition tapes proved it.

In a clip released by Nine Entertainment, Dave explained how the painful breakup “derailed all the things I thought would pan out” but it was probably for the best.

As for the reason behind the split, Dave noted how his unnamed girlfriend was from a completely different world and she appreciated different things because of it.

“She was from a real rich family and I’m from out west out here, I just appreciate different things to what she did,” he said. “I can’t keep up and I don’t want to keep up.”

It would be incredibly easy to look past the cracks in a relationship if your partner is especially loaded so it says a lot about Dave’s values that he was able to walk away from a life of comfortability. It’s undoubtedly a good thing they split up too because Dave seems to have genuinely met his person in Jamie, that is if they manage to stay together throughout the long experiment and inevitable group dinner confrontations.

In the same interview, he also teased his dream woman and Jamie seems to fit the bill.

“I want someone nice and be with them see them be happy, and me being able to be the reason they’re happy,” Dave said.
