Gabby Petito’s mum reveals huge red flags she saw in Brian Laundrie before daughter’s murder

She said Gabby ‘wasn’t herself’ and ‘would call me up crying’

The mother of Gabby Petito has revealed the huge red flags she saw in her daughter’s relationship with Brian Laundrie, before he killed her. Right now the Gabby Petito case is back being spoken about, as Netflix has released American Murder: Gabby Petito.

Brian and his fiancée Gabby had been on a road trip together across the US. The trip was planned to last for four months, beginning in July 2021. But, Gabby Petito disappeared in August that year. Her family reported her as missing in September, after having not heard from her in weeks. Gabby was discovered dead on September 19th. It’s believed Brian Laundrie had strangled her around the date of August 28th.

Nichole Schmidt, Gabby’s mum, said there were “red flags” in the couple’s relationship long before this happened. Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie began dating in March 2019, when Gabby was almost 20 and Brian was 21. According to posts on Instagram, they got engaged in July 2020.

Nichole said she could tell her daughter was “off” during the relationship. “People always ask me, ‘Did you know what was going on? Did you see any red flags?’” Nichole told E! News. “And what I tell people now is, ‘I didn’t know it at the time. I thought she was just stressed out.’”

Nichole said when she was with Brian, her daughter’s attitude and mood was “bipolar, almost”. She noticed this during their road trip together. “It was just anger and aggression,” she said. “She would call me up crying.”

During Gabby’s final days, Nichole said her daughter “wasn’t herself.” She explained: “She was off – and that is a red flag.”

Nichole said she hopes sharing advice will help those who suspect a loved one may be in a domestic violence situation: “Don’t necessarily look at the abuser or who might be an abuser,” she said.

“Look at the actions and the mood of the person that you think, ‘Something’s wrong’. If you gut is telling you that, start asking questions.”
