Pete Davidson and Kim Kardashian have reunited on SNL, but why did they split?!

Pete Davidson and Kim Kardashian first publicly met on Saturday Night Live, but fast-forward to now and they’re reuniting on the show’s 50th anniversary as a former couple following a split over a year ago. Things didn’t work out for their brief romance, despite Pete occasionally appearing on The Kardashians and bringing Kim ice cream on demand, so why exactly did they call it off?

Why did Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson split?

Kim and Pete broke up in August 2022. Just months before, Pete and Kim’s ex, Kanye West, were texting, and the whole message thread was released online. Kanye made a violent diss tape video and called Pete the nickname ‘Skete’, and it wasn’t long before E! News confirmed Kim and Pete were over. Insiders said the pair had “a lot of love and respect for each other.”

Without naming Pete, Kim said on The Kardashians, “Breakups are just not my thing…I’m proud of myself. We just had talks and talks, we had been talking about it,” Kim explained. “So it was both of us just communicating really well about it. It’s obviously sad.” She later said there was a “lot of guilt” about “what he went through during our relationship.”

At the following Met Gala in 2023, Kim and Pete were seen chatting amicably with Usher, and seemed to be on good terms. Now, they’re reuniting on SNL, and just week before, Pete removed all of his tattoos, including that one that seemingly had all the initials of Kim’s four children. He also had, “My girl is a lawyer,” tattooed, which is no longer inked on his skin.

Kim and Pete went public with their relationship in 2021, after asking a producer to get his number for her on the Saturday Night Live set. They officially met two years before, at during Kid Cudi’s birthday dinner in 2019, but things didn’t turn romantic until SNL two years later, which is where Pete previously worked as a stand-up comedian full-time.

“A few days later, I called the producer at SNL and I was like, ‘Hey do you have Pete’s number?’” Kim said during an episode of The Kardashians. “They were like ‘yeah’ and I text him. I wasn’t even thinking like ‘Oh my god I’m gonna be in a relationship with him.’ I was just thinking… I heard about this BDE. I need to get out there. I need to just, like, jump start my… I was just basically DTF.”

It wasn’t long before Kim went public with their relationship on Instagram, introduced him to her kids (who he is believed to have got inspiration for an initials tattoo from), and by 2022, the former celebrity couple were attending a White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner arm-in-arm. They also went to the Met Gala together that year, but didn’t go on the red carpet as a couple.

Kim said on The Kardashians: “He is literally the best human being I’ve ever met. The best heart. People always say, ‘He’s so funny,’ and it has to do with how funny he is. That’s, like, fourth on my list on why I like him. [He] always wants the best for people, can handle anything, always does it with grace. He’s really, really thoughtful and humble and genuine. I would say the perfect word to describe Pete is genuine.”
