It was quite the gruesome death

Alert the authorities, and wave the flag half-mast, because the Duolingo owl has died. It’s an international tragedy that struck the internet yesterday, and if you’re not wearing black and in mourning, something is definitely wrong with you. Since learning the awful news and watching the very emotional funeral on TikTok, the only thing on anyone’s mind is how the Duolingo owl died. People have had a real hoot trying to crack the case, but the true answer as to how he died is on his own TikTok page, sitting in plain sight.

It wouldn’t be Duolingo without an iconic send-off, so of course Duo’s funeral was a grand affair. Imagine if he’d just been put in a coffin-shaped bag and thrown into the back of a truck. That would be awful.

There’s a huge hint on TikTok as to how the Duo died, and it was posted by Duo himself. Just five days before the tragic news of his passing went viral, the Duolingo TikTok account posted the owl to a sound that began with “I drank shampoo, I’m probably gonna die.” All feathers point to this being the reason for Duo’s untimely death. Yes, it’s just as unhinged as you would expect it to be.

Why has Duolingo killed off its mascot?

The Duolingo team genuinely have some of the best marketing tactics in the world, but right now, nobody can figure out why they’d kill off the beloved mascot, Duo. A Duolingo spokesperson told The Tab: “There is an ongoing investigation that we cannot comment on extensively at this time. We know no owl as dedicated as Duo just drops dead without a story. Keep an eye on our social channels as we uncover the shocking (and possibly absurd) truth behind his untimely demise.”
