Here are the six best first date spots in Cardiff this Valentine’s
Love is in the air this month, so here are the best places to impress your first date
With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, many of you may be going on a first date or a casual one with the boyfriend of five years.
So, whether it’s fighting first date nerves or finding the spot to impress your long standing partner, we’ve got you covered.
We know how daunting organising can be and you want to impress so you can score that second date or keep your relationship alive. Therefore here is a helpful guide on the very best spots to take your (first) date in Cardiff.
You can thank us later.
Bute Park![](https://cdn.thetab.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/08124715/image1.jpeg)
The most under appreciated of Cardiff’s parks, but one perfect for a first date walk.
Take a walk along the River Taff, admire the woodland and city views and end at the Secret Garden Café. Here, they offer a variety of lovely treats and tasty drinks – all of which are created with locally and/or ethically sourced ingredients. Plus, Bute Park is easily accessible from both Cathays and Taly.
If this hasn’t convinced you to take your “beaut” date to Bute Park, we don’t know what will.
Maison de Bœuf
If you’re an old romantic and wish you could whisk your date off to Paris, why not bring Paris to Cardiff? Head to Maison de Bœuf. The more budget friendly option than flights to France.
This Parisian-themed restaurant offers a small, yet tasty menu, gorgeous interiors, and amazing cocktails.
If you really want to increase the romantic vibes, go on a Thursday evening as they host a live jazz night. A bucket list restaurant which is guaranteed to impress your date.
Pen y Fan
Most Read
First dates are all about getting to know one another, right? Why not throw yourself in the deep end and take a four hour hike up Pen y Fan. A date where you can get to know each other, see some spectacular views, all whilst getting your steps in. Plus, its budget friendly as its free to climb!
Now, we know it’s not technically in Cardiff, but getting there is fairly straightforward. Driving there takes about an hour from Cathays, and on arrival there is a 24-hour car park you can use. If you can’t get there via car, there are some handy public transport routes too.
What a first date to tell the grandchildren about, eh?
Boom Battle Bar
If you like a little friendly (or should we say flirty) competition, Boom Battle Bar is the perfect first date spot for you.
Here you can turn your hand to everything from axe throwing to karaoke. They even cater specifically for date nights. For £15pp you can choose between 30-minutes of shuffleboard or darts and get a cocktail each. A perfect opportunity to get to know one another whilst getting your competitive spirit going.
Boom battle bar gets five big booms from us.
A pub quiz
Arguably the best date spot on the list, a pub quiz. You’ll always have something to talk about, you get to show off your intelligence and you can choose when the date ends. If it’s going well have another pint and carry on the conversation, if not finish the date when the quiz ends. You can’t go wrong!
There are so many quiz nights held throughout the week in Cathays. The Mack and The Taf host theirs every Thursday, The Flora on Tuesdays and The Woodville’s is on a Sunday.
Go and get those brains whirring and those hearts fluttering.
Go to a rugby match
Seeing as you live in Cardiff, the chances of your date enjoying rugby are fairly high, so why not take them to a game.
The Principality is hosting so many upcoming games, for some really reasonable prices. Watch the Wales V England women’s Six Nations match for only £5 on the 29th March, or the EPCR Challenge Cup final for £20 on the 23rd May.
Good luck and enjoy your dates. If they’re successful remember to thank us in the wedding speeches!
