Breakdancer Raygun forced to deny wild theory about why she was picked for Olympics

Despite everything, she’s backing herself

Australian breakdancing meme queen and icon Raygun has been forced to deny a huge theory surrounding how she secured her spot at the Paris Olympics 2024.

Raygun, full name Rachael Gunn, has gone viral after her catastrophic breaking routine scored zero points for Australia, and people have been questioning how she even managed to get there in the first place, representing her country.

One huge spread theory claimed the 36-year-old, who has a PhD in Cultural Studies and is a lecturer at Macquarie University, must have been paid by the government to perform the way she did.

“The taxpayer does not fund the Australian Olympic Team’s campaign – costs are met entirely by the Australian Olympic Committee – which itself receives no Federal funding,” her reps told LADbible. “Rachael Gunn qualified for the Olympic Games by winning the Oceania Qualifying event held in Sydney last year. She receives no Federal funding for her sporting career.”

So, it looks as though Raygun’s dance routine in the WDSF Oceania Breaking Championships in 2023 is how she secured her place, no wild conspiracy theory there. It’s also been rumoured Raygun is related to people on Olympic boards – another thing completely made up by the internet.

Following the performance and reaction, Raygun told reporters: “All my moves are original. Creativity is really important to me. I go out there and I show my artistry. Sometimes it speaks to the judges and sometimes it doesn’t. I do my thing, and it represents art. That is what it is about.”

AusBreaking, the Australian sporting body that sent Rachael Gunn to the Olympics to represent breaking for the country, added: “Let us focus and celebrate breaking as an Olympic sport and uphold the values of the Australian and global breaking community of peace, love and unity.”
