Here’s why clips of Raygun breakdancing at the Olympics are being wiped from the internet
Enjoy them while you can!
I don’t mean to alarm anyone, but the memes of Raygun breakdancing at the Paris 2024 Olympics are going to be short lived, as the clips are slowly being removed from the internet.
36-year-old breakdancer Rachael Gunn became an overnight meme when her breakdancing routine for Team Australia scored her a big fat 0 at the Paris Olympic Games. Since then she’s been compared to a dog rolling around after a bath, me trying to get comfortable in bed when it’s hot and a kid begging mum to watch their dance moves. Twitter has been alive.
But soon it will be all over, as it’s been revealed the clips are being completely wiped from the internet. Why are we never allowed to have innocent fun?!
The clips might be viral right now, but not for long if the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has anything to do with it. During and after the games, the IOC has been harsh in copyright-striking any online accounts that post its videos and pictures from various Olympic events.
According its website, no part of the site may be copied, republished, reproduced, or transmitted without actual written authorisation. And let’s be real, who is getting a letter to confirm they can post a meme?
If you use the clips on Twitter, some have found the posts in questions have been taken down, and their accounts have even been blocked for distributing copyrighted images and videos. Some have even reportedly had emails citing takedown requests from the IOC and the Olympics, due to violations of the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act).
