A complete rundown of the events which saw Olympic swimmer Luana Alonso leave Paris 2024
Team Paraguay claimed her presence in the village created an ‘inappropriate atmosphere’
The removal of Paraguayan swimmer, Luana Alonso, from the athletes’ Olympic Village has all of Paris talking right now. The 20-year-old athlete was removed from the athletes’ living quarters at the Olympics after she allegedly created an “inappropriate environment” in the village, resulting in Luana throwing in the towel and retiring from swimming for good. Here is a comprehensive breakdown of the Luana Alonso Olympics drama which saw her pull out of the games.
Luana said she would rather compete for the United States
Luana reportedly made claims that she would rather compete for the United States rather than Paraguay in the Paris Olympic Games. She said: ““I want to represent the United States more.”
In the same comment, the athlete further claimed: “They threaten me that they are going to upload a statement, that I am going to leave for universality, if I support my sport it is thanks to my sponsors, they want to humiliate me and say ‘it is not a big deal that you are leaving for universality'”.

After being eliminated last week in the heats of the women’s 100 metre freestyle swimming event, claims emerge that Luana had distracted other athletes in the Olympic Village through socialising and wearing non official clothing which was not part of the Team Paraguay kit provided to the athletes.
Former Paraguayan tennis player, Larissa Schaerer, put her two pence into the mix, claiming that Luana’s presence in the village was impacting Team Paraguay. She said: “Her presence is creating an inappropriate atmosphere in Team Paraguay. We thank her for proceeding as instructed, as it was of her own free will that she did not spend the night in the Athletes’ Village”.
Luana spoke out about her ‘removal’
Luana insisted she was the victim of lies, clarifying that she was never kicked out of the Village but that she left on free will. She said in the following statement: “I just wanted to clarify that I was never kicked out or removed from anywhere, please stop spreading false information”.

Luana surprisingly announced her retirement from swimming at just 20 years of age last week, after failing to progress from the heats of the women’s 100 metre freestyle race.
Announcing her retirement on Instagram, Luana said: “Swimming: Thank you for allowing me to dream, you taught me how to fight, to try, perseverance, sacrifice, discipline and many more. I gave you part of my life and I don’t change it for anything in the world because I lived the best experiences of my life”.
