Omg, Avril Lavigne just addressed the rumour she’s been replaced by body double ‘Melissa’
Avril (or maybe Melissa) got grilled about it on a podcast yesterday
If you’ve ever spent any time on this little demon we know as the internet, you will probably have at some point or another come across the internet conspiracy that pop punk princess Avril Lavigne was replaced by a body double doppelgänger called Melissa. The wild theory started on the dark side of internet forums in the early 2000s and has never really went away. Avril Lavigne has mentioned it a couple of times throughout the years when she’s had it brought up to her, but she’s never gone into it fully until yesterday – where the legend appeared on the Call Her Daddy podcast and spoke about the conspiracy theory in detail.
The host Alex Cooper not so subtly asked Avril what the wildest rumour she’d ever heard about herself was, and Lavigne said she knew exactly what Cooper was getting at.
“I know what you’re talking about,” she said – of course nodding to the out of control conspiracy theory Avril Lavigne died in the Let Go era and got replaced by body double Melissa. “I mean, it’s just funny to me. Like, on one end, everyone’s like, ‘You look the exact same. You haven’t aged a day.’ But then other people are like, there’s a conspiracy theory that I’m not me.”
“Honestly, it’s not that bad. It could be worse, right? I feel like I got a good one. I don’t feel like it’s negative. It’s nothing creepy. Obviously, I am me. It’s so dumb.” Thank god we cleared that up.

She did say though that she’s not actually the only artist with body double rumours, saying “I think that they’ve done that with other artists. I’m not the only one. I think, like, other people have that.”
The first time Avril ever addressed the rumour was in 2014, when she said “Well, I’m here. I’m in Brazil.” It was the first time she’d ever been made aware of it. She last addressed it in 2022, saying to Galore Magazine “So it’s funny because everyone says I look the same, but then there’s that. That doesn’t make any sense. Also, how random? When people bring it up, and it’s been brought up to me for like, years, that there’s this conspiracy theory that I’m not me or something? I’m a clone? How did something like that get so—I don’t know, it’s just the weirdest rumour.
