You tell us: Norwich Hairdressers

We asked UEA students where to go (and where to avoid) for a haircut in Norwich. Essential reading to avoid weeks of streaky highlights or a cringey mullet.

Changing hairdressers is an irrationally scary prospect for most of us.

But unless you (like me) wish to continue strategically booking three hour train trips home when your precious hairstyle starts to lose its shape, then you’ll have to venture into the unknown world of Norwich hairdressing.

Chances are you’ll still have a collection of coupons in a box leftover from the Freshers’ Fair, but how do you know you won’t end up with streaky highlights, or that they won’t get scissor happy with your painstakingly grown locks? Luckily for us a few brave students have dared to dip a toe in the pool. Here’s what they say…

For the girls

‘For the whole of first year I avoided getting my hair cut in Norwich but with less time to pop home in second year, I had to bite the bullet. I tried my local salon Freshair on Avenue Road. It’s reasonably priced and run by friendly local hairdressers. Even better, they offer 10% Student Discount. I was happy with my haircut, it looked exactly as I had asked and I think the salon is actually better than the one I was so afraid to leave in Hertfordshire! I recommended the salon to my housemates who have also since been impressed by the customer service and end result.’

‘Had my hair cut at Charisma near Castle Mall and they were really lovely. I had a groupon voucher and they treated me no differently from any other customer. I’ve been back there ever since, every time I need my hair done! Always have my hair cut by the same girl who is especially nice and she cuts my hair beautifully!’

Colour on Castle Meadow, has a very friendly atmosphere. Enjoyed my tea and kitkat whilst I had my hair dyed! Ask for Laura or Nicola, they’re particularly good. They were very helpful with suggestions on what would work best and I was very happy with the outcome. Very good value and student prices.’

‘Avoid Blonde (on Castle Meadow); the service was average, with the staff in there a bit more interested in their own conversations! The haircut wasn’t too bad but the half-head of highlights was terrible and streaky.’

‘But do go to Zany (on Unthank Rd); lovely people, student discounts, haircut and colour both really good,  and they did exactly what I asked.’

For the guys

‘I was lured into Crop Shop (on Castle Meadow) by the brash boast of ‘£10 cuts’ in the window and the fact you don’t have to book. Little did I know what I was getting myself into; it can only be described as haircutting on an industrial scale. The result’s always awful no matter what you ask for, but for some reason I keep going back. I guess it’s the (cheap) thrill of not knowing what I’ll emerge looking like. My favourite was the mullet I ended up with for a few months last year.’

Method (on St. Giles Street) is the best haircut I’ve had in Norwich. Ask for Mickey, although she nearly chopped off her finger with the scissors she still provided a cracking cut. Though at all costs reject the post-cut hair product unless you want it dripping in your eyes on the walk home.’

‘I had Freshers Fair vouchers for Kinki (on Castle Street), but even with the discount it was still far from cheap. Good cut, but took hours. However, my female flatmate raved about it.’
