We asked demonstrators at Downing Street what they thought of Trump’s Muslim ban

Yesterday evening, thousands of demonstrators lined Downing Street in protest of Donald Trump’s Muslim ban and Theresa May’s failure to condemn his executive order.

President Trump has currently banned people from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen, which are all Muslim countries, from travelling to the US.

We asked protesters what they though of Trump and his controversial policies.

Why are you at the protest today?

I went on the Women’s March a couple of weekends ago and my reason for going to that was because I feel like I’m part of the group of people who have been feeling very miserable over the last year and the world is going the way we don’t want it to be going. After the huge positive feeling I got at the Women’s March I thought “I’m going to go to the next one and the next one..”

What do you think of Trump’s first week as President?

It makes me scared and and it makes me feel sick.

Why are you at the protest today?

Because it’s a completely international and global epidemic. It doesn’t matter what race you are and what class you’re from, the majority of people all feel the same way so we have to stick together.

Both of my parents were refugees, they emigrated to Canada, so issues like refugee policy, immigration policy, pro-freedom, pro-equality for all genders are very important to me.

Why are you at the protest today?

I came to support the Muslims who are at the moment stuck at airports and I’m protesting against the fascist executive orders that Donald Trump is trying to put into practice. I know that this executive order will be the beginning of many more executive orders which we will not like, so we are here to basically tell him that he is a scum.

Why are you at the protest today?

I am an American and I was horrified, upset, embarrassed, when he put in place the executive order on Friday.

What do you think of Trump’s first week as President?

It’s been as bad as I could have expected. We shouldn’t be surprised but I still was given the extent of the different executive actions, of reconfiguring different parts of government to put inexperienced and very ideologically non-centre people in key positions. I’ve been surprised at both the content of his decisions in terms of things like the Muslim ban and getting rid of Obamacare but also the restructuring of government in  frightening ways.

Why are you at the protest today?

Because we disagree with everything Trump has done so far.

What do you think of Trump’s first week as President?

It’s literally history repeating itself, and if no-one does anything.. He’s literally being another Hitler.

Worse than expected?

I kind of expected it really. But for it all to happen so quickly, I think everyone’s a bit shocked.

What do you think of Theresa May’s relationship with Trump?

I don’t get it, all these other countries are speaking out against him because that’s what you should do and she’s not. I don’t want her to represent us.

Why are you at the protest today?

We’re fundamentally against the Muslim ban. Our government haven’t spoken out articulately or thoroughly enough against it – we’re here to show them that we disagree and that we need to be stronger. Our special relationship isn’t enough.

I can’t believe a person can do so much damage in one week, I don’t even know all the terrible shit he’s doing. It’s been so much, every morning I wake up to new horrendous piece of news and I just think what the fuck? I don’t even know half of it..

Why are you at the protest today?

To protest against the Muslim ban. But I’m not happy about the fact that when the word Muslim is used, it seems to be drowned out by the word refugees. It seems like everyone is scared to say the word Muslim which is why we’re here in the first place. It’s almost as if it’s all for image, or to protest against other things that Trump has done.
