The only survey that matters: It’s official, Durham is the best student night out in the UK
Get Licensed gave a Durham student night out a score of 9.44/10
I must say, I did not think that this day would come. After endless reminders from friends at universities in big cities that I was spending a three year prison sentence in a tiny and glorified city with no nightlife whatsoever, it looks like we’re the ones with the bragging rights now. 17 college bars, seven nightclubs and more pubs than I can be bothered to count – we are absolutely massive, there is no denying it.
Get Licensed ranked Durham as the best student night out in the UK for 2024, with nearby York and Newcastle finishing in second and third places. Get Licensed said : “Durham takes the crown as the best city for a university night out, and honestly, it’s no surprise”. I wouldn’t quite agree that this supposed lack of surprise was universal but it seems the judges just really love a Woodgate.
The survey uses data from Numbeo, useyourlocal and Tripadvisor. Criteria include bars and clubs per 100,000 people, average cost per pint of beer, average taxi cost per 1km and fear of being mugged, robbed and attacked.
Durham performed particularly well on the matter of safety, with a score of 76/100 for feeling safe while walking alone at night and a score of 9/100 respondents feeling fear of being mugged or robbed.
Durham also scored well for bars and clubs per 100,000 people, with its score of 44 being beaten by only two cities in Bath and Plymouth. 95 per cent of bars and clubs in Durham also received ratings of three stars and above.
Numbeo report the average taxi cost per 1km in Durham to be £1.09, suggesting that a taxi ride home for me from Jimmy Allen’s should cost just £1.23 – my Uber history indicates that inflation has risen by a significant amount in the time since this data was collected.
Overall, Durham received a score of 9.44/10 – clearly there’s no reason to venture elsewhere on a night out as nearby cities Newcastle and Sunderland were scored at 7.92 and 7.14. On the other end of the spectrum, London received a dismal score of 1.36 while Birmingham and Manchester also struggled with scores of 2.56 and 3.14. My hometown of Colchester came in at a measly 3.78, reaffirming my desire for a Durham night out after 13 long weeks at home over summer.
To Jimmy Allen’s, Babylon, Bohemia, Katie O’Brien’s, Loft, Osbournes, Fabio’s, I say congratulations. May the pints ever be in your favour.
In the words of Get Licensed: “Whether you’re in the mood to dance the night away or just chill with a pint, Durham offers both quality and peace of mind”.
