Wait, did one of the Lyle and Erik Menendez jurors have a heart attack like in Monsters!?
In the show she had to be replaced
In the final episode of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, the controversial new true crime series on Netflix from Ryan Murphy, we see the conclusion of the second trial which saw the brothers receive their guilty verdict from the jury. In the scene, an explosive and heated argument breaks out between the female jurors as a woman, Leigh, passionately argues that the brothers have fictionalised their story of abuse from their parents Jose and Kitty which they claim lead them to shoot their parents. In the climax of it, Leigh has what appears to be a heart attack and collapses to the floor and has to be replaced by a new member of the jury. With a lot of details in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Story being fictionalised for TV, did this actually happen with the juror having a heart attack or was it made up by Netflix for the series? Here’s what we know.
After the closing statements of the Menendez brothers, the jury went to decide their verdict. 14 days after the debate of the verdict began, Judge Weisberg presiding over the trial removed two female jurors from the jury. One of them was pregnant, and went into premature labour – and the other had a heart attack. What we saw in the show featured no pregnancy, but it’s clear that Ryan Murphy and the team were using the character of Leigh to represent these true events as it happened in real life. We didn’t get confirmation that Leigh had a heart attack, but it was heavily implied from what we saw on screen.
There are some differences, though. In real life, the pregnant woman and the woman who had a heart attack were replaced by a male juror and a female juror. In the show, it wasn’t to decide whether the Menendez brothers were guilty or not guilty because that had already been established – it was to decide the sentencing. So, Leigh in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story on Netflix is in fact based on some true events with a juror that did have a heart attack mid case.
