Love Island star Gemma Owen ripped by Greenpeace for PrettyLittleThing brand deal

Greenpeace has absolutely ripped Gemma Owen for signing a deal with PrettyLittleThing

‘Another Love Island runner-up becoming the queen of plastic pollution’

Charity Greenpeace has absolutely ripped into Love Island 2022 finalist Gemma Owen over her deal with PrettyLittleThing. Earlier this week, Gemma signed a six-figure deal with the fast fashion brand, becoming its latest UK ambassador.

Greenpeace clearly isn’t very impressed with the signing, branding Gemma the latest “queen of toxic plastic pollution” and slamming PrettyLittleThing as “a major contributor to the climate crisis”. On Twitter, Greenpeace said: “So much for those reusable Love Island water bottles… [Well done] to another Love Island runner-up for becoming the newest [queen] of [toxic] plastic pollution. Read on to see why @OfficialPLT is a major contributor to the climate crisis”.

The thread goes on to claim up to 89 per cent of PrettyLittleThing’s clothing is made with new plastic and that the company’s business model and production scale encourages throwaway culture. “Say NO to @OfficialPLT and its disposable plastic clothing,” the thread ends. This week, Gemma was announced as PrettyLittleThing’s latest brand ambassador, signing a year long contract. She will be designing a number of collections for the brand and is also expected to be helping PrettyLittleThing launch its resale platform “PLT Marketplace” which is meant to be a move towards sustainability.

Speaking to the MailOnline Gemma said: “This really is a dream come true for me. I wore PrettyLittleThing throughout my time on the show and now being announced as one of their newest ambassadors alongside some incredible talent including Love Island alumni is really special. The team has been amazing and I’m excited to get to work and start designing some collections for you all.”

The deal quickly got backlash, with people pointing out PLT had run polls on Twitter asking if Indiyah or Gemma should get deals with the brand, and Indiyah received much more votes. PrettyLittleThing was accused of “using” Indiyah for “engagement” during the show.

People have also called it ironic that Gemma has signed with a fast fashion brand, despite the fact she owns her own swimwear brand, which prides itself on being sustainable.
