This is how Hinge’s most compatible feature actually works

Well now I’m going to overthink all my prompts

Finding the ideal match on a dating app can often feel like a lottery. Hinge aims to give users more information with which they could decide whether or not they want to match someone. And it’s true that you can get a sense of someone’s general vibe by the way in which they answer the prompts. The “Most Compatible” feature on Hinge is also designed to boost your chances of getting a successful match. The question is: how does it actually work?

What is the Most Compatible feature on Hinge?

Hinge offers users a “Most Compatible” match every single day. This is based on everything the app knows about you and your potential match- from religion to, political views, to whether you want kids.

The app also factors in what you put as answers to the three prompts.

Jean-Marie McGrath, Director of Communications at Hinge, told Elite Daily: “Hinge’s algorithm is specifically designed to introduce you to potential dates who meet your preferences (and whose preferences you meet).

“You’ll only see people who you can actually connect with.”

What’s the Gale-Shapley algorithm?

The Most Compatible feature is powered by the Gale-Shapley algorithm, which is also known as the Stable Marriage Problem.

The algorithm takes into account all the info you feed into your profile, and likewise for your potential match.

Based on this info, Hinge will give you a new Most Compatible match every day.

McGrath said: “Considering everything we know about you so far, your ‘Most Compatible’ is the person we think you would be most interested in dating, who would be most interested in dating you.”

Where does the ‘We Met’ feature come in?

If your allegedly compatible match turns out to be a flop, you can use Hinge’s “We Met” feature which will help further boost users’ chances of successful matches.

The We Met feature asks users privately to answer whether they went on a date with their match and if they’d choose to see them again.

Hinge CEO Justin McLeod told Elite Daily: “What we’re trying to do is bring the best dating experience possible to users.

“We’re trying to continually improve our service by making sure we’re tracking who’s going out on dates and if the dates are actually good.”
