Um, so it turns out there was a totally different ending planned for Squid Game

The creator of Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk, has revealed there was an alternate ending planned for the series and I am in shock.

In the last episode of the Netflix series Gi-hun is seen at an airport about to board a plane to see his daughter. However he then decides against it after speaking to the game creators on the phone and promises vengeance against them.

And now series creator Hwang has revealed they had originally thought of the series ending differently with Gi-hun boarding the plane to see his daughter.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly Hwang said they debated what message they wanted to portray with the series and that was tied into their decision of how to end the show.

He said: “We actually wrestled between two different scenarios for the ending. There was one, the other alternate ending, where Gi-hun would get on the plane and leave.

“And then there was of course the one where he would turn back and walk towards the camera.

“We constantly asked ourselves, is it really right for Gi-hun to make the decision to leave and go see his family, to pursue his own happiness? Is that the right way for us to really propose the question or the message that we wanted to convey through the series?

“We came to the conclusion that the question that we wanted to propose cannot be done if he left on the plane. The question that we want to answer – why has the world come to what it is now? – can only be answered or can only be proposed if Gi-hun turned back and walked towards the camera. So that’s how we ended up with that ending in the finale.”

Ok but I’m still mad he didn’t get on the plane to see his daughter.

Squid Game is Netflix’s most successful series ever, clocking in at least 111million viewers worldwide.

Yesterday Hwang confirmed the series would be getting a second season and he is currently in the process of planning it.
