What is ‘adult swim’ and why is it all over TikTok rn?
Wtf is [adult swim] and [as]?
Another day, another TikTok trend. This time, it’s Adult Swim. And it’s everywhere.
To understand why this trend is everywhere and what the videos all mean, you need to know what Adult Swim actually is. Adult Swim is basically the adult version of Cartoon Network. After 8pm and till 6am, Cartoon Network morphs into Adult Swim and the programming changes to more adult stuff, and airs shows like Family Guy, King of the Hill, Cowboy Bebop and Robot Chicken.
Whilst these shows were on, Adult Swim became known for creative ad bumps that came on between the adverts and the next show. Think how Channel 4 has those daft little clips, like where a big number four is playing football with kids in the street for example.
Adult Swim became known for really creative ones. At first, they were all mostly centred around pools, because it is Adult SWIM after all. One classic example being a lifeguard shouting all kids get out the pool but the pool is just being full of old people. Comedy gold!
They got more absurd and weird, with the only rule being they end with the [adult swim] or just [as] logo.
Like the Backyardigans and other random pop culture stuff that TikTok decides to latch on to, Adult Swim is getting a viral comeback. Most of the videos use a remix of a song called Time Moves Slow by BADBADNOTGOOD. The trend has creators trying to make things feel like nostalgic Adult Swim but with a contemporary TikTok twist – e.g, the iconic, viral TikTok feta pasta but with the [as] logo on.
