Meet the cast of new Netflix dating show ‘Love on the Spectrum’

Netflix has just released its latest dating show, this time following young people who are all on the autistic spectrum. Love on the Spectrum follows a cast of seven singles and two existing couples through the world of dating and finding love.

The five-part show sees them all given help from dating experts and their families to build confidence and nail down the one. The Netflix synopsis for the series says: “Finding love can be hard for anyone. For young adults on the autism spectrum, exploring the unpredictable world of dating is even more complicated.”

Chloe

Age: 19

19-year-old Chloe was diagnosed with autism when she was 11. She was also born not being able to hear fully. She says she was bullied a lot at school and has had dates end things with her when she has told them she is autistic. Chloe now wants someone who is kind and can see her for who she actually is. She is open to dating people of any gender.

Michael

Age: 25

Michael found out he had asperges when his mother told him aged 13. He thinks his family may have had the diagnosis earlier though, as he recalls often being sat alone in class at school. He collects toys and enjoys bowling, pool and watching TV and says he’s ready for love after trying to find it himself for a while. His greatest dream in life to become a husband, but he’s quite picky with his match, saying his ideal girl can’t be “tomboyish” or “gothic”.

Maddi

Age: 23

Maddi’s interests include video games, books and animals. She describes herself as independent, smart and quirky. Maddi has never had romantic feelings for anyone but says her ideal partner is tall, muscular and rich. She wants someone with similar personality traits to her.

Kelvin

Age: 21

Kelvin describes himself as caring, smart, gentle and considerate. He’s never been on a date but is ready to find a girlfriend. He enjoys manga and anime and says his ideal girlfriend is friendly, serious and different. He lives with his father, who is also looking forward to Kelvin hopefully finding the one.

Olivia

Age: 25

Olivia describes herself as a hopeless romantic, but has been single for her whole life. She loves cats and acting and performing. She currently goes to a theatre group for people on the spectrum, which she says has changed her life. Olivia, who was diagnosed aged 18, says she found it extremely difficult being a woman on the spectrum as she feels girls with autism get “assessed by how male they are”.

Mark

Age: 29

Mark likes dinosaurs and hates swearing. He says he wants to find a girl he can love as much as he loves dinosaurs, as he’s really into studying prehistoric life. He admits he is worried he’ll never find the right girl for him.

Andrew

Age: 27

Andrew works in family and community services in Newcastle. He’s never been in a relationship or even on a date but as he approaches 30, he believes his time may be running out to find love and hopefully start a family. He describes himself as polite, on time, cute, funny and organised. His interests include teddy bears and jigsaws.

Ruth and Thomas

Ruth and Thomas are one of the two established couples in the cast of Love on the Spectrum. They have been dating four four years and engaged for a year. Ruth is 22 and Thomas is 25, and they were introduced to one another by Ruth’s sister. They are both autistic and currently live together, with Ruth’s pet snake. Thomas works a bus driver, despite admitting he is much more of a railway person.

Jimmy and Sharnae

Jimmy and Sharnae are the second of the established couples, having been together for three years. They’ve recently moved in together. The couple, who are both aged 21, had their first date at the cinema and they say they are very much still in love today. They had their first kiss on their first date and became official pretty much straight away. Jimmy was 20 when he was diagnosed as autistic, and he says his girlfriend Sharnae helped him to get the diagnosis recognised.
