Netflix releases ‘Pandemic’ docuseries just as coronavirus breakout spreads

People are convinced this is the weirdest PR stunt ever

Earlier this week, Netflix released a new documentary called Pandemic: How to Prevent an Outbreak. And everyone is freaked out with the coincidence of it being released just as coronavirus is spreading worldwide.

But what is the documentary about? Is it linked to coronavirus? Is this the most elaborate PR stunt from Netflix ever?

What is ‘Pandemic: How to Prevent an Outbreak’ on Netflix about?

Pandemic: How to Prevent an Outbreak is a six-part documentary series. It examines the worldwide healthcare system, discussing the possible sources of flu viruses that could cause a worldwide pandemic. The show analyses whether or not we’d be able to manage another pandemic and goes around the globe to explore possible viruses, accessing whether any could spread throughout countries or the entire world.

The audience follows a team of scientists who are seen working hard on creating vaccines and undergoing research to prevent future outbreaks of diseases. The series contains an eerie voiceover from Dr. Dennis Carroll, director of USAID’s Emerging Threats Unit.

The Netflix synopsis for the show reads: “In this docuseries, meet the heroes on the frontline of the battle against influenza and learn about their efforts to stop the next global outbreak.”

Is it linked to the coronavirus outbreak?

Whilst the show isn’t actually about coronavirus, people can’t help but be freaked out that Netflix has quietly dropped a series about health pandemics, as one is happening.

One person said: “Netflix just dropped a doc called Pandemic right after the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan, China. I’m feeling suspicious”. Another said: “Did… Did Netflix know about the coronavirus before it started spreading? Or did they just wait until the next new virus started spreading?”.

Other tweets added: “Weird how @netflix release the #Pandemic documentary series and now we have the #coronavirus” and: “So you mean to tell me Netflix just released a show about preventing a pandemic AT THE SAME TIME people are fearing coronavirus being the next pandemic”.

Others believe this is the best PR stunt ever. Saying: “PR stunt of the year goes to @netflix for creating the coronavirus to promote their new show ?” and: “I think the coronavirus is just well orchestrated marketing campaign by @netflix for their new Pandemic show”.
