Ranked: The best Too Good To Go surprise bags to collect near UCL campus

Whether you’re coming home late from the library with no food in the fridge or you just want to treat yourself on a budget, Too Good To Go can be a real life saver. 

The app offers users “surprise bags” of leftover food and drink that businesses would otherwise have thrown out at the end of the day, giving you restaurant quality meals at discounted prices.

With London alone generating nearly 2 million tonnes of food waste each year, you also get to do your bit to reduce that number and the carbon emissions that go along with it. 

While you may not always get the items you were hoping for, it is a great way to try out new places without a guilty conscience. 

Without further ado, here is our definitive ranking of the five best Too Good To Go spots around UCL.

Number five: Bex Coffee

Hidden inside the brutalist Brunswick Centre, Bex Coffee offers some delicious pastries in its £4.99 baked goods bag just 10 minutes away from campus.

We were lucky enough to try four different items: A hazelnut chocolate doughnut, a generous slice of chocolate cake, a cheese croissant, and a börek roll.

The börek roll was our personal favourite, featuring a spinach and feta filling enveloped in crispy filo pastry.

Nonetheless, the pricing is steep for the quantity of food that you get compared to other options on the app, meaning that Bex Coffee comes in at fifth place on our ranking. 

Number four: Sababa Station

On the other side of campus, Sababa Station serves up Levantine classics at affordable rates.

We opted for the £5.99 meat option, and received a takeaway box filled with grilled chicken, rice, tabouleh, hummus, falafel, and more. 

The flavours were bountiful and the portion sizes charitable, leaving us more than satisfied as we walked out of the door.

One thing that Ta’Mini does not shy away from is generosity. 

We were given three bags full of tasty pastries, both sweet and savoury, having paid £5.99 for the Lebanese cafe’s bakery bag. 

While some of them were a bit dry – understandable seeing as it was closing time – this was easily fixed with a bit of water and an oven. 

The quantity of food we received could have easily fed three or four people, making this bag an unmissable bargain. 

Number two: Tortilla

We picked up the vegetarian surprise bag from Tortilla for £4.40 – not much more than the price of a meal deal – and were amazed by the freshness of the food.

The bowl that awaited us was packed with various veg, salsas, rice, and beans. 

For half of its usual price, you get a healthy and balanced meal to take home with you after a long day at uni; what’s not to like?

Number one: Ambala

Nearby Euston Station, Ambala offers a Savoury Snacks Bag for the price of just £3.00. 

Given the price, we expected to receive a bag with two or three small items, yet found ourselves faced with two whole meals worth of South Asian pastries.

Our favourite was the samosa, which was packed with flavour and somehow still tasted fresh, but we enjoyed everything that Ambala had given us. 

I’ve already turned on notifications on my phone for when these spots make their bags available next!
